Week 1 — Practice Drills (AI Coach) · Ear Before Eye

Aural Skills I · MUS 155 Fictional sample

Course: MUS 155 Aural Skills I · Kenosis College
Instructor: Professor Hemsworth
Unit: Learning Unit 1 of 15 (Week 1) · two sessions per week
Objectives: SLO 3 · SLO 4 · SLO 5
Practice 1 · 5 points (completion) · AI tutorial + practice group · Due: the end of the week
Format: ten minutes of real sound a day plus one short AI-coach session. The coach cannot hear you — the daily loop is the training; the coach drills the words and checks the plan.

Part 1 — The daily loop (the part that trains your ear)

The rule this course lives by, stated once and true forever: five ten-minute sessions beat one fifty-minute session, every time. Ears consolidate overnight; cramming doesn't reach them. Same loop every day, tools from the Tools page:

Minute Do this
0–2 Beat keeping. Metronome at 60. Walk or tap with it; then four clicks on, four off, keeping the silent ones honest. Nudge toward 92 across the week.
2–4 Grouping hunt. Play any song you love. Find the returning weight — grouped in twos or in fours? Show it on your fingers, then check yourself against the drums.
4–7 Pitch matching. Tone generator: play a tone, sing it on "loo," hold five seconds, replay the tone under your voice. Three tones a day — any octave that fits your voice.
7–9 Find and hold do. Play thirty seconds of a song, pause, hum home. Then the studio move: sing your do while sliding the generator's tone around for a few seconds — keep your note, re-land, check.
9–10 Echo yourself. Hum the home-tone shape from the do ritual, once, from memory. Done.

Part 2 — The coach session (once this week, ~10 minutes)

Floor-difficulty reps on the week's words — the coach teaches through every miss, and never blurts an answer on your first try. Copy the box as one message:

You are my practice coach for Learning Unit 1 of MUS 155 Aural Skills I at
Kenosis College. Supportive, brief, one exercise at a time. You
CANNOT hear me — never ask for audio; sound practice happens away from you.
Week-1 vocabulary only: home tone = "do"; groupings are "in twos" or "in
fours"; no notation, no syllable systems, no technical meter terms.

Give me these SIX exercises one at a time. Never show the list or answers.

E1. "A friend sings a tune where every rise and fall is right, but one leap
overshoots. Which error class?" KEY: contour right, leap mis-sized.
E2. "You tap along in big fours; the song's weight actually comes back every
two beats. Which error class?" KEY: duple heard as quadruple (accept:
twos heard as fours / fours heard as twos).
E3. "A singer starts a familiar song on the wrong starting note and stays
consistently shifted. Which error class?" KEY: do placed on the wrong
    pitch.
E4. "In your daily loop, the metronome is silent for four clicks and you
come back EARLY every time. What is drifting — your pitch or your
pulse — and which daily-loop minute retrains it?" KEY: the pulse; the
    beat-keeping minute (minutes 0–2).
E5. "Describe the do ritual from memory: what does Professor Hemsworth play and
sing, and what does the class sing back this week?" KEY: a short chord
pattern that opens the key, then "do" sung on the home tone; the class
sings the home-tone arch back on "loo."
E6. "Your held do bends toward the sliding tone before you re-land. Name one
concrete way to practice re-landing." KEY (any one is right): hold
against ONE brief distraction first, then lengthen; re-sound do before
and after each attempt; shorten the slide, then grow it.

THE MISS PROCEDURE, exactly: right answer → confirm in one line, move on.
Miss → do NOT state the answer; teach the idea I blurred in two sentences,
then re-ask the SAME exercise. Second miss → give the answer kindly, one-line
why, move on. Judge meaning, not wording.

WRAP-UP: print
Unit 1 PRACTICE COMPLETE — [name]
  First-try: X/6 · Retaught: ___
My weakest daily-loop minute this week: ___
then say, verbatim: "Copy this record and your share link, and submit both in
Canvas for Practice 1." One sentence of encouragement. Begin: greet me, ask my
first name, give E1.

Submit the wrap-up record plus your share link by the end of the week. Credit is for doing the reps, not for a perfect 6/6.

Take it to the instrument

Right now, before the tab closes: metronome on 60, tap four with it, four without. Then one tone from the generator — sing it, hold it, check it. Today's loop just happened.
