(A) Week 3 Overview — Start Here
Welcome to Unit 3: The Divided Beat, Heard
Every beat splits — in half, or in three. That split separates a march from a lullaby, and this week your ear learns to call it in one hearing. This morning, theory names compound meter and "1 la li"; an hour later the room divides in half and proves it on one shared pulse. Also, by ear alone: the shuffle — quick pairs leaning long–short, never written down.
Work the table top to bottom.
| # | Do this | Type | Points | Due |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Tutorial 3 — AI tutor: "1 &" vs "1 la li," and why 6/8 is not 3/4 | Tutorial | 10 | before session 1 |
| 2 | Drill Studio 3 — in class, both meetings: the room split, compound echo, dictation, the shuffle game | Studio | 20 | in session |
| 3 | Practice 3 — the daily ten-minute loop + AI coach | Practice | 5 | the end of the week |
| 4 | Skills Check 3 — 8 live-hearing items, in class, session 2, closed to AI | Skills check | 8 | session 2 |
| 5 | Submission 3 — three recordings (cards, spoken split, straight-then-swung) + self-diagnosis + coach report | Submission | 100 | the end of the week |
The late-work policy is in the syllabus.
Why this makes you a better musician
A 12/8 ballad and a waltz will never blur for you again — you'll feel which one the band is in before the first phrase ends, and when the count-off says shuffle, you'll sit inside the lilt with the drummer, no words needed.
How to succeed: small daily doses — the flip drill takes two minutes, and by session 2 it's reflex.
(B) Announcement — Week 3
Subject: One beat, two insides — this week you hear which
Hi everyone,
You already know this week's material by heart: you've rowed the boat gently down the stream your whole life, and that lilt is 6/8. This week it gets its name and its count — "1 la li," from this morning's theory session — and your ear learns to tell beats that halve from beats that split in three.
Do Tutorial 3 before session 1; the studio's centerpiece drill assumes it. Session 2 ends with Skills Check 3 — eight questions, all ears, two answered purely by feel: straight, or shuffled? Recordings and practice close at the end of the week. Next week: Major on solfège.
Bring your hands. They already know the beat.
See you in the studio,
Professor Hemsworth
