Instructor-facing. This file is excluded from the student cartridge. Every stimulus named below is notated, with its performance script, in
_keys/KEY-stimulus-sheet-week-04.md— nothing musical is spelled out here.
Named in Music Theory I: the major scale and its W/H pattern, all fifteen major keys, key signatures, the circle of fifths, scale degrees ^1–^7, movable-do solfège — the morning the syllable system arrives.
First time teaching this
The point of the LU: this is the handover week. For three weeks the class has sung on "loo" while the theory course built the staff, the beat, and the divided beat; this morning it named the major scale and movable do. An hour later every sound they already own gets its syllable — and three firsts happen in one week: first full solfège singing, first true sight-singing, first melodic dictation. Keys this week are the four the theory class just spelled: G, F, D, and C major.
The one thing that must land: do travels. The syllables are a map of distances from home, not new note names — sing the same ladder from four different homes on day one so nobody files do as "another word for C." The second thing: the dictation protocol. The first melodic dictation must feel like a ritual they already know (it extends Unit 2's hear–tap–count–write to pitch), not a test sprung on them.
The most common way it goes wrong: the syllables become the content. Solfège is scaffolding — the rubric inversion says a right pitch on a wrong syllable barely costs, and a right syllable on a wrong pitch fails. Say that out loud session 1. Guard rails: the do–mi–sol figure is only ever "the do–mi–sol shape" (its name arrives in Unit 9 — never "chord," never "triad"); and degree numbers are distances from do, not finger numbers.
The do ritual
Identical ritual, all fifteen units (defined in full in Unit 1's B, ## The do ritual): play I–IV–V–I in the day's key, sing "do," the class sings the shape back. This week the ritual gets its upgrade: the response is sung as do–mi–sol–mi–do on syllables — same shape they have sung since Unit 1, new words. Say so, minute one: "You've sung this answer on 'loo' for three weeks. As of this morning it has names. Same door, same shape — now say what you sing."
Drill sequence
Session 1 — stimuli by keys-sheet name; tempi, repetitions, and the words to say.
| Time | Segment | Stimulus / tempo | Reps | Words to say |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0:00–0:04 | The do ritual, upgraded | Ritual (fence 1), 76 BPM | 2 cycles | script above |
| 0:04–0:14 | The scale ladder | S1 in C, then S2 in D — 66 BPM first pass, 84 BPM target | 2 passes each | "Up and back on syllables. Listen for the two small steps — mi to fa, ti to do. They're the shape of major." |
| 0:14–0:24 | Do–mi–sol echo | E1 (C), E2 (G), E3 (F) at 76 BPM — ritual in each new key first | 2 play–echo cycles each | "New home, same shape. This shape gets a name in Unit 9; for now it's the do–mi–sol shape, and it's yours." |
| 0:24–0:36 | Degree orientation | O1 (G), O3 (C) at 60 BPM, then 72 BPM | 2 rounds each | "Sing do. Now sing 3. Now 5. Don't climb the ladder — go there." |
| 0:36–0:52 | First sight-singing | SS1, SS2 (notated in P), first pass 60 BPM, target 72–76 BPM | 2 passes each | "Eyes on the page, do in your ear. Hear the first bar in your head before a sound comes out — that silence is the skill." |
| 0:52–1:08 | First melodic dictation | D0 walkthrough, then D1, D2 at 72 BPM, three hearings each per script | scripted | "Same ritual as rhythm week, one new layer: hearing one, tap and catch the rhythm; hearing two, sing it inside on syllables; hearing three, write. Do and the key signature are on your paper already." |
| 1:08–1:15 | Close + assignments | — | — | "Ten minutes a day, four keys. Tutorial before session 2 if you haven't. Recordings close at the end of the week." |
Session 2 — new keys, the pickup, sixteenths at speed, then the check.
| Time | Segment | Stimulus / tempo | Reps | Words to say |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0:00–0:03 | The do ritual | Ritual in F, 76 BPM | 1 cycle | "Same door. New house." |
| 0:03–0:12 | Echo, full width | E4 (D), E5 (C, in six-eight), E6 (F) at 76–80 BPM | 2 cycles each | "The lilt from Unit 3 is back — now on syllables." |
| 0:12–0:22 | Orientation + sixteenth counting | O2 (F), O4 (D), one hearing per call · R1 rhythm at 69 BPM, then 84 BPM | 1 round + 2 passes | "Commit on one hearing. Then mouths only: one-e-and-a at speed — the quick notes ride inside the beat you already keep." |
| 0:22–0:40 | Sight-singing + solo hearings | SS3, SS4 (the pickup) at 60→76 BPM; rotation of 6–8 solo turns | 2 passes each | "SS4 starts before the bar — one note of ti leaning into do. Feel the downbeat arrive, don't manufacture it." |
| 0:40–0:52 | Dictation | D3 (F), D4 (D) at 72 BPM, three hearings per script | scripted | "Protocol, not memory. Tap, sing inside, write." |
| 0:52–0:55 | Check setup | — | — | administration script, keys sheet |
| 0:55–1:09 | Skills Check 4 | Stimuli 1–8 per script, 69–84 BPM | scripted | script only — identical administration matters |
| 1:09–1:15 | Close | ritual, once, in G | 1 | "Three firsts in one week and you did all three. By week's end: scale, shape, one melody, one dictation." |
When they miss it
Per drill: what the miss sounds like, and the immediate corrective — a specific next sound, never a re-explanation.
| Drill | Error mode — what it sounds like | Immediate corrective |
|---|---|---|
| Scale ladder | The top sags — la and ti arrive flat and the octave never lands | Isolate the top four notes, sol–la–ti–do, as their own echo; then rebuild the full ladder from sol upward before starting from do. |
| Scale ladder | Descending loses the small steps — do–ti and fa–mi get sung wide coming down | Play ti–do and mi–fa as bare pairs, up then down; have the class sing just those pairs, then run the descent alone. |
| Do–mi–sol echo | Overshoot — sol lands a step high (contour right, leap mis-sized) | Play mi–sol alone, twice, slowly; echo just that pair; then the whole shape. |
| Degree orientation | Ladder-climbing — a student audibly runs do-re-mi under their breath to reach every target | Legal at first; wean it: drill only 1–3–5 as instant targets until they're reflexes, then re-add 2 and 4. |
| Sight-singing | Singing without audiating — the first note is a guess and the line derails immediately | Stop; run the do ritual; have the class sing bar 1 silently (lips closed, hand tracing) and only then out loud. |
| Sight-singing | Do parked on the wrong pitch — the tune is internally right but shifted | Re-sound do at the piano; class hums do, then starts again from the printed first degree. |
| Dictation | Writing during hearing one — heads down, pencil moving, rhythm lost | Name it, warmly, and re-run: pencils flat on the desk for hearing one; hands tap. |
| Dictation | Pitch attention erases rhythm — right contour, note values gone | Fall back one layer: notate rhythm only on the next hearing, then add pitch on a fresh hearing. |
| Sixteenth counting | Subdivision lost mid-phrase — "one-e-and-a" starts crisp, smears by bar two | Halve the tempo, mouths only, hands tapping the quarter; rebuild speed in two steps. |
Escalation path
If a drill fails room-wide, drop one rung: the scale ladder falls back to its first five notes (do up to sol and back); orientation falls back to targets 1–3–5 only; sight-singing falls back to SS1 or to the scale itself sung from the page; dictation falls back to D0 (the floor card) or to rhythm-only notation with pitch added on an extra hearing. Re-establish tonic the same way every time: stop, run the do ritual once, resume. Abandon criterion: a segment still failing after two escalated attempts gets banked — "your ears will own this by next week; moving on" — and logged. The named pick-up hook: every Unit 4 drill returns inside Unit 5, where this exact material flips to minor — the scale ladder returns as three-forms singing, the do–mi–sol shape returns with its middle lowered, orientation and dictation re-run in parallel keys. A banked Unit 4 drill re-enters there at floor difficulty; nothing is lost.
Tempo table
| Drill | First pass | Target |
|---|---|---|
| The do ritual | 76 BPM | 76 BPM (never varies) |
| Scale ladder S1–S2 | 66 BPM | 84 BPM |
| Do–mi–sol echo E1–E6 | 76 BPM | 80 BPM |
| Degree orientation O1–O4 | 60 BPM | 72 BPM |
| Sight-singing SS1–SS4 | 60 BPM | 72–76 BPM |
| Dictation D0–D4 | 72 BPM | 72 BPM (fixed by script) |
| Sixteenth counting R1 | 69 BPM | 84 BPM |
| Skills-check stimuli | as scripted, 69–84 BPM | fixed by script |
Rotation note (P states it to students): the solo-hearing rotation continues inside the orientation and sight-singing segments — 6 to 8 students heard individually per session means every voice is heard solo roughly every two and a half weeks at a full section of 36; in a small room, everyone, every session. Keep the ledger current: the Unit 7 check assumes the rotation has touched everyone twice.
