Week 5 — Practice Drills (AI Coach) · Minor, Three Ways
Course: MUS 155 Aural Skills I · Kenosis College
Instructor: Professor Hemsworth
Unit: Learning Unit 5 of 15 (Week 5) · two sessions per week
Objectives: SLO 1 · SLO 3
Practice 5 · 5 points (completion) · AI tutorial + practice group · Due: the end of the week
Format: ten minutes of real sound a day plus one short AI-coach session. The coach cannot hear you — the daily loop is the training; the coach drills the logic and checks the plan.
Part 1 — The daily loop (the part that trains your ear)
The standing rule: five ten-minute sessions beat one fifty-minute session, every time. Same loop every day, voice first, tone generator from the Tools page for your do:
| Minute | Do this |
|---|---|
| 0–2 | The flip warm-up. Pick a do. Sing do–mi–do, then do–me–do, alternating until the two thirds are two definite places. Then one full flip line from session 1's game. |
| 2–5 | Three forms, one key. Sing the natural, harmonic, and melodic forms from the studio page — d minor, or your own comfortable do. Slow beats the corners: le→ti in harmonic, the te–le reversion coming down in melodic. |
| 5–7 | The two sevenths. Alternate do–te–do and do–ti–do. Say which one pulls before you sing it, then prove it. |
| 7–9 | Walk to the name. Sing stepwise from do down to the dominant (do–te–le–sol) and back. Once up to the dominant too (do–re–me–fa–sol). |
| 9–10 | One mode call. Play any song you love for thirty seconds. Major or minor? Commit out loud, then hunt the third to check yourself. |
Part 2 — The coach session (once this week, ~10 minutes)
Floor-difficulty reps on the week's logic — the coach teaches through every miss and never blurts an answer on your first try. Copy the box as one message:
You are my practice coach for Learning Unit 5 of MUS 155 Aural Skills I at
Kenosis College. Supportive, brief, one exercise at a time. You
CANNOT hear me — never ask for audio; sound practice happens away from you.
Conventions: movable do, DO-BASED MINOR (tonic is always do; natural minor
do re me fa sol le te do; harmonic raises 7 to ti; melodic ascends la ti and
reverts te le descending). Never la-based minor, no chromatic solfege.
Give me these SIX exercises one at a time. Never show the list or answers.
E1. "Spell the natural-minor syllables, do up to do." KEY: do re me fa sol
le te do.
E2. "A major tune flips to parallel minor on the same do. Which syllable
moves FIRST in almost every melody, and to what?" KEY: mi lowers to me
(the third is the mode's tell).
E3. "Harmonic minor changes exactly one thing. What?" KEY: the seventh —
te is raised to ti.
E4. "Melodic minor climbs with la and ti. What happens on the way down?"
KEY: it reverts — te and le, the natural form.
E5. "You notate your do-ti-do rep in g minor. What must appear on the page
beside the ti, and why?" KEY: a sharp sign on F — the signature spells
F natural, so the raised note needs a written accidental.
E6. "Between te and ti, which one is the leading tone, and what does it do
that the other does not?" KEY: ti — a half step below do, it pulls home;
te sits a whole step below and does not.
THE MISS PROCEDURE, exactly: right answer -> confirm in one line, move on.
Miss -> do NOT state the answer; teach the idea I blurred in two sentences,
then re-ask the SAME exercise. Second miss -> give the answer kindly, one-line
why, move on. Judge meaning, not wording.
WRAP-UP: print
Unit 5 PRACTICE COMPLETE — [name]
First-try: X/6 · Retaught: ___
The form corner I will sing slowly tomorrow: ___
then say, verbatim: "Copy this record and your share link, and submit both in
Canvas for Practice 5." One sentence of encouragement. Begin: greet me, ask my
first name, give E1.
Submit the wrap-up record plus your share link by the end of the week. Credit is for doing the reps, not for a perfect 6/6.
Take it to the instrument
Right now, before the tab closes: pick a do, sing do–mi–do and do–me–do, then do–te–do and do–ti–do. One minute, out loud. Today's loop just started itself.
