(A) Week 5 Overview — Start Here
Welcome to Unit 5: Minor, Three Ways
Last week your do got a scale. This week it gets a shadow: the same do with three notes lowered. You'll flip familiar tunes from major to minor without moving home, sing minor's three forms, and take your first minor dictation — including the raised note whose accidental you write. This morning, theory spells the forms; an hour later your ear tells them apart.
Work the table top to bottom.
| # | Do this | Type | Points | Due |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Tutorial 5 — AI tutor: the flip in words + minor conversions in four keys | Tutorial | 10 | before session 1 |
| 2 | Drill Studio 5 — in class, both meetings: the flip game, three forms, mode ID, minor dictation | Studio | 20 | in session |
| 3 | Practice 5 — the daily flip loop + AI coach | Practice | 5 | the end of the week |
| 4 | Skills Check 5 — 8 live-hearing items, in class, session 2, closed to AI | Skills check | 8 | session 2 |
| 5 | Submission 5 — three recordings (forms, melody, the flip) + self-diagnosis + coach report | Submission | 100 | the end of the week |
The late-work policy is in the syllabus.
Why this makes you a better musician
You'll hear whether a song is major or minor before anyone tells you — and when the note under do lifts and pulls, you'll know which minor you're inside. That's the difference between guessing at the dark keys and knowing them.
How to succeed: flip something daily. Two minutes of do–mi–do against do–me–do beats an hour of staring at spellings.
(B) Announcement — Week 5
Subject: Same home, darker room — minor week is here
Hi everyone,
Every ballad you love does one specific thing: it keeps do where it is and lowers three notes. That's minor — and your ear has been fluent in it for years without the names.
Do Tutorial 5 before session 1 — its conversions are the spelling the studio sings. In session 1 we flip Twinkle into the shadows on one do; in session 2 we name the three forms by ear, take our first minor dictation, and finish with Skills Check 5. Recordings and practice close at the end of the week. Next week: Intervals outward I.
Bring your voice. The dark keys are friendlier than they sound.
See you in the studio,
Professor Hemsworth
