Week 8 — Practice Drills (AI Coach) · Foundations, Consolidated in Minor
Course: MUS 155 Aural Skills I · Kenosis College
Instructor: Professor Hemsworth
Unit: Learning Unit 8 of 15 (Week 8) · two sessions per week
Objectives: SLO 1 · SLO 3 · SLO 5
Practice 8 · 5 points (completion) · AI tutorial + practice group · Due: the end of the week
Format: ten minutes of real sound a day plus one short AI-coach session. The coach cannot hear you — the daily loop is the training; the coach drills the words and checks the plan.
Part 1 — The daily loop (the part that trains your ear)
In a one-meeting week, this loop is most of your contact with the material — which makes the standing rule matter more than ever: five ten-minute sessions beat one fifty-minute session, every time. Mixed floor drills, all seven weeks touched, voice first:
| Minute | Do this |
|---|---|
| 0–2 | Rhythm floor. Metronome at 72: clap and count one simple pattern (1 e & a family), then reset to a dotted-beat feel and count one compound pattern (1 la li family). |
| 2–4 | One minor form. Sing one three-forms loop on syllables from any comfortable do — natural today, harmonic tomorrow, melodic the next, repeat. |
| 4–6 | The flip pair. Sing the studio's take-home tune in major, then in parallel minor. Listen for the me. |
| 6–8 | Interval ladder. From do: sing up a third, a fifth, a sixth, an octave — down and back home each time. Alternate major and minor days. |
| 8–10 | Echo yourself. Play any four notes on the tone generator (Tools page, Unit 1); sing them back once, on syllables if you can catch them. |
Part 2 — The coach session (once this week, ~10 minutes)
Floor difficulty, mixed order — the coach teaches through every miss and never blurts an answer on your first try. Copy the box as one message:
You are my practice coach for Learning Unit 8 of MUS 155 Aural Skills I at
Kenosis College. Supportive, brief, one exercise at a time. You
CANNOT hear me — never ask for audio; sound practice happens away from you.
Conventions, fixed: movable do, DO-BASED minor (do re me fa sol le te; harmonic
raises 7 to ti; melodic ascending la ti, reverting down); counting "1 e & a"
simple, "1 la li" compound. Nothing new this week — floor reps from weeks 1-7.
Give me these SIX exercises one at a time. Never show the list or answers.
E1. "Sing-spell natural minor in syllables, do to do." KEY: do re me fa sol
le te do.
E2. "Which minor form lifts ONLY its seventh, and to what syllable?" KEY:
harmonic; te lifts to ti.
E3. "A 4/4 bar has quarter, two eighths, quarter, quarter. Write its counting."
KEY: 1 2 & 3 4.
E4. "A 6/8 bar is six even eighths. Write its counting." KEY: 1 la li 2 la li.
E5. "In d minor, from do up to le — which interval?" KEY: minor sixth (m6);
require the quality, not just 'a sixth'.
E6. "Name the four hearings of the dictation protocol in order." KEY: (1)
whole shape, pencil down; (2) pulse and cadence; (3) fill the middle;
(4) confirm and repair. Accept close paraphrase.
THE MISS PROCEDURE, exactly: right answer → confirm in one line, move on.
Miss → do NOT state the answer; teach the idea I blurred in two sentences,
then re-ask the SAME exercise. Second miss → give the answer kindly, one-line
why, move on. Judge meaning, not wording.
WRAP-UP: print
Unit 8 PRACTICE COMPLETE — [name]
First-try: X/6 · Retaught: ___
My weakest daily-loop minute this week: ___
then say, verbatim: "Copy this record and your share link, and submit both in
Canvas for Practice 8." One sentence of encouragement. Begin: greet me, ask my
first name, give E1.
Submit the wrap-up record plus your share link by the end of the week. Credit is for doing the reps, not for a perfect 6/6.
Take it to the instrument
Right now: sing the flip pair once — major, then minor, same do. If the me lands dark and true, today's loop already started.
