Week 9 — Practice Drills (AI Coach) · Triads by Ear
Course: MUS 155 Aural Skills I · Kenosis College
Instructor: Professor Hemsworth
Unit: Learning Unit 9 of 15 (Week 9) · two sessions per week
Objectives: SLO 1 · SLO 3 · SLO 4
Practice 9 · 5 points (completion) · AI tutorial + practice group · Due: the end of the week
Format: ten minutes of real sound a day plus one short AI-coach session. The coach cannot hear you — the daily loop is the training; the coach drills the grid and checks the plan.
Part 1 — The daily loop (the part that trains your ear)
The standing rule: five ten-minute sessions beat one fifty-minute session, every time. Same loop every day; tone generator and the trainer from the Tools pages:
| Minute | Do this |
|---|---|
| 0–2 | The ladder. Generator gives a do. Sing the major shape (do–mi–sol–mi–do), then the minor (do–me–sol–me–do), same do. Feel the middle move. |
| 2–4 | The lean and the stretch. Sing the diminished card from the studio page (ti–re–fa shape), slow. Then the augmented attempt: sing do–mi, stretch one more half step on "loo," check the top against the generator. |
| 4–7 | Quality ID reps. The Unit 6 Tools-page trainer, chord mode, the four triad qualities, root position only. Ten answers minimum; frame first, then the middle. |
| 7–9 | One melody. One sight-singing card from the studio page, audiation pause included. Rotate through the week. |
| 9–10 | Wider lilt. Count one bar of 9/8 aloud ("1 la li 2 la li 3 la li"), then one of 12/8, tapping the dotted-quarter beat. Done. |
Part 2 — The coach session (once this week, ~10 minutes)
Floor-difficulty reps — the coach teaches through every miss and never blurts an answer on your first try. Copy the box as one message:
You are my practice coach for Learning Unit 9 of MUS 155 Aural Skills I at
Kenosis College. Supportive, brief, one exercise at a time. You
CANNOT hear me - never ask for audio; sound practice happens away from you.
This week's facts: a triad is two stacked thirds; major = M3+m3, minor =
m3+M3, diminished = m3+m3, augmented = M3+M3. The tonic triad is do-mi-sol
in major, do-me-sol in minor. The augmented fifth has no syllable in this
course; augmented triads are echoed on "loo" only.
Give me these SIX exercises one at a time. Never show the list or answers.
E1. "Same do, two shapes: do-mi-sol, then do-me-sol. Which one is the minor
triad, and what moved?" KEY: the second; the third (mi lowered to me).
E2. "Major and minor triads share their outer frame. What interval is it?"
KEY: a perfect fifth (root to fifth).
E3. "G major triad: G B D. Which note is the fifth?" KEY: D.
E4. "Same three notes, but now the third is on the bottom. New chord, or
the same chord?" KEY: the same chord, inverted - a different member in
the bass (root position has the root on the bottom).
E5. "Augmented has no syllables. Name one concrete way to practice it at
home anyway." KEY (any one is right): sing do-mi, then stretch the top
a half step on "loo" and check against the tone generator; or drill it
in the trainer as ID only; or alternate it with major, blocked, and
describe the difference.
E6. "One bar of 9/8 versus one bar of 12/8: how many dotted-quarter beats
in each?" KEY: three versus four.
THE MISS PROCEDURE, exactly: right answer -> confirm in one line, move on.
Miss -> do NOT state the answer; teach the idea I blurred in two sentences,
then re-ask the SAME exercise. Second miss -> give the answer kindly, one-
line why, move on. Judge meaning, not wording.
WRAP-UP: print
Unit 9 PRACTICE COMPLETE - [name]
First-try: X/6 · Retaught: ___
My weakest daily-loop minute this week: ___
then say, verbatim: "Copy this record and your share link, and submit both
in Canvas for Practice 9." One sentence of encouragement. Begin: greet me,
ask my first name, give E1.
Submit the wrap-up record plus your share link by the end of the week. Credit is for doing the reps, not for a perfect 6/6.
Take it to the instrument
Right now, before the tab closes: one tone from the generator as do. Sing do–mi–sol–mi–do, then do–me–sol–me–do. Two triads, named, in fifteen seconds — today's loop just started itself.
