(A) Week 9 Overview — Start Here
Welcome to Unit 9: Triads by Ear
This is the week the course keeps its oldest promise. The shape you've sung since day one — by syllable since Unit 4 — is do–mi–sol: no name, on purpose. This morning's theory session names it: a triad. An hour later you'll sing it again, as a named thing. All that sound, then the word — that order is what this course is.
From there the one shape becomes four qualities. You'll sing members out of blocked chords, hear which note is on the bottom, and take dictation whose skips are chord shapes.
Work the table top to bottom.
| # | Do this | Type | Points | Due |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Tutorial 9 — AI tutor: symbol ⟷ quality ⟷ the two stacked thirds | Tutorial | 10 | before session 1 |
| 2 | Drill Studio 9 — in class, both meetings: the naming, the quality ladder, member extraction, root-or-not | Studio | 20 | in session |
| 3 | Practice 9 — the daily quality ladder + AI coach | Practice | 5 | the end of the week |
| 4 | Skills Check 9 — 8 live-hearing items, in class, session 2, closed to AI | Skills check | 8 | session 2 |
| 5 | Submission 9 — ladder + melody recordings, tool session, diagnosis | Submission | 100 | the end of the week |
The late-work policy is in the syllabus.
Why this makes you a better musician
Chords are the currency of every band room, and quality is what a chord says. After this week your ear files them by structure — perfect, shrunk, or stretched — so you catch the minor-for-major substitution in one bar and land the third on request.
How to succeed: the ladder, daily — five ten-minute sessions beat one fifty-minute session, every time.
(B) Announcement — Week 9
Subject: The shape you've sung for five weeks gets its name in session 1
Hi everyone,
Small confession: since day one I've had you singing something I refused to name. This week's theory session names it — the triad — and an hour later you sing it back, knowing. You could sing it before you could say it. That was the plan.
Do Tutorial 9 before session 1 — it hands you the four-quality grid. Session 2 ends with Skills Check 9; recordings, tool session, and practice close at the end of the week. Next week: Sevenths by ear.
Come sing the thing you already know.
See you in the studio,
Professor Hemsworth
