Week 10 — Practice Drills (AI Coach) · Sevenths by Ear
Course: MUS 155 Aural Skills I · Kenosis College
Instructor: Professor Hemsworth
Unit: Learning Unit 10 of 15 (Week 10) · two sessions per week
Objectives: SLO 1 · SLO 3 · SLO 4
Practice 10 · 5 points (completion) · AI tutorial + practice group · Due: the end of the week
Format: ten minutes of real sound a day plus one short AI-coach session. The coach cannot hear you — the daily loop is the training; the coach drills the logic and checks the plan.
Part 1 — The daily loop (the part that trains your ear)
The standing rule: five ten-minute sessions beat one fifty-minute session, every time. Same loop every day, voice first, tone generator from the Tools page for your do:
| Minute | Do this |
|---|---|
| 0–2 | The ladder. Pick a do. Sing do–mi–sol–ti up, then down. Land the top lightly — a half step shy of home, never rounding up to do. New key tomorrow. |
| 2–4 | The four stations. From the same do: do–mi–sol–ti, re–fa–la–do, sol–ti–re–fa, ti–re–fa–la. Say each chord's quality before you sing it — major seventh, minor seventh, dominant, half-diminished. |
| 4–6 | The classic pair. At a keyboard or app: play the four notes of maj7 on any root, then lower only the top a half step (the bare-7 sound). Don't sing syllables on the second one — hum it on "loo" and feel the shimmer turn into a lean. |
| 6–8 | The pull. Sing sol–ti–re–fa, then resolve: ti up to do, fa down to mi. Twice slow, once at tempo. |
| 8–10 | The snap. Clap one bar of "1, 2-a, 3, 4" — long lean, late snap — then sing your ladder in that rhythm. Done. |
Part 2 — The coach session (once this week, ~10 minutes)
Floor-difficulty reps on the week's logic — the coach teaches through every miss and never blurts an answer on your first try. Copy the box as one message:
You are my practice coach for Learning Unit 10 of MUS 155 Aural Skills I at
Kenosis College. Supportive, brief, one exercise at a time. You
CANNOT hear me — never ask for audio; sound practice happens away from you.
Conventions: movable do; the diatonic seventh arpeggios this week are
do-mi-sol-ti (maj7), re-fa-la-do (m7), sol-ti-re-fa (dominant), and
ti-re-fa-la (half-diminished). A bare 7 in a chord symbol means DOMINANT
(major triad + minor seventh), never a major seventh.
Give me these SIX exercises one at a time. Never show the list or answers.
E1. "A chart says C7. Is the seventh of that chord B or B-flat, and what
quality is the chord?" KEY: B-flat; dominant.
E2. "Spell Gmaj7." KEY: G B D F#.
E3. "Which arpeggio do you sing for the chord on re, and what quality is
it?" KEY: re-fa-la-do; minor seventh.
E4. "In m7b5, which member is lowered compared to a plain m7?" KEY: the
fifth.
E5. "The seventh chord on degree 7 of a major key: half-diminished or fully
diminished? Where does the fully diminished one actually live?"
KEY: half-diminished (viiø7), always; fully diminished is at home in
harmonic minor.
E6. "You clap a beat that leans long and snaps late — a dotted eighth plus
a sixteenth. Which count does the snap land on?" KEY: the 'a' — the last
quarter of the beat.
THE MISS PROCEDURE, exactly: right answer -> confirm in one line, move on.
Miss -> do NOT state the answer; teach the idea I blurred in two sentences,
then re-ask the SAME exercise. Second miss -> give the answer kindly,
one-line why, move on. Judge meaning, not wording.
WRAP-UP: print
Unit 10 PRACTICE COMPLETE — [name]
First-try: X/6 · Retaught: ___
The station I will sing slowest tomorrow: ___
then say, verbatim: "Copy this record and your share link, and submit both in
Canvas for Practice 10." One sentence of encouragement. Begin: greet me, ask
my first name, give E1.
Submit the wrap-up record plus your share link by the end of the week. Credit is for doing the reps, not for a perfect 6/6.
Take it to the instrument
Right now, before the tab closes: pick a do, sing do–mi–sol–ti, and hold the top note against the generator's do. Feel the half-step buzz? That's maj7, in your own voice. Today's loop just started itself.
