Week 12 — Practice Drills (AI Coach) · Harmonic Listening II
Course: MUS 155 Aural Skills I · Kenosis College
Instructor: Professor Hemsworth
Unit: Learning Unit 12 of 15 (Week 12) · two sessions per week
Objectives: SLO 1 · SLO 3 · SLO 4
Practice 12 · 5 points (completion) · AI tutorial + practice group · Due: the end of the week
Format: ten minutes of real sound a day plus one short AI-coach session. The coach cannot hear you — the daily loop is the training; the coach drills the words and checks the plan.
Part 1 — The daily loop (the part that trains your ear)
The standing rule: five ten-minute sessions beat one fifty-minute session, every time. Cadence hearing is expectation, built in daily doses:
| Minute | Do this |
|---|---|
| 0–2 | Formula floor. Sing the four bass moves from the studio page on solfège, any comfortable do: sol–do, sol–la, fa–do, parked sol. Twice each. |
| 2–4 | The promise game. Sing do–fa–sol… and stop. Feel the lean. Resolve it three ways out loud: to do, to la, back to do. |
| 4–6 | Real-song stops. Play the last thirty seconds of any song you love. At the final phrase, pause it one moment early, sing the note you expect, let it finish, check. Name the stop. |
| 6–8 | Question/answer. Hum a two-bar idea that stops mid-thought; answer it with a version that lands on do. You just improvised a period. |
| 8–10 | Echo yourself. Sing the deceptive move — sol–la — five times, softer each time, until the sidestep feels like a place and not a mistake. |
Part 2 — The coach session (once this week, ~10 minutes)
Floor difficulty — the coach teaches through every miss, never blurting answers. Copy the box as one message:
You are my practice coach for Learning Unit 12 of MUS 155 Aural Skills I at
Kenosis College. Supportive, brief, one exercise at a time. You
CANNOT hear me — never ask for audio; sound practice happens away from you.
Conventions, fixed: movable do; authentic cadence = V to I (bass sol-do;
perfect when the melody ends do, imperfect when it ends off home); half =
ends on V (bass at sol); deceptive = V to vi (bass sol-la); plagal = IV to I
(bass fa-do). A phrase ends in one cadence; question + answer = a period.
Give me these SIX exercises one at a time. Never show the list or answers.
E1. "Recite the four bass moves with their cadence names." KEY: sol-do
authentic; sol-la deceptive; fa-do plagal; arriving on sol, half.
E2. "In G major, the plagal arrival: which two letters in the bass?" KEY:
C then G.
E3. "A phrase ends V to I but the melody stops on mi. Finished or not, and
what is the cadence called?" KEY: closed but not fully - imperfect
authentic (IAC).
E4. "Your ear expected do and the bass went up one step instead. Which
cadence, and which syllable did it land on?" KEY: deceptive; la.
E5. "In your daily loop, the promise game keeps resolving early - you can't
hold the lean. Name one concrete fix." KEY (any one): stop after sol and
breathe a full bar; sing sol quieter each rep; let a metronome hold two
silent clicks before you resolve.
E6. "A hymn phrase parks on the away chord and the next phrase starts like
the first one did. What did you just hear, in this week's names?" KEY: a
half cadence ending an antecedent; the consequent begins - a period.
THE MISS PROCEDURE, exactly: right answer → confirm in one line, move on.
Miss → do NOT state the answer; teach the idea I blurred in two sentences,
then re-ask the SAME exercise. Second miss → give the answer kindly, one-line
why, move on. Judge meaning, not wording.
WRAP-UP: print
Unit 12 PRACTICE COMPLETE — [name]
First-try: X/6 · Retaught: ___
My weakest daily-loop minute this week: ___
then say, verbatim: "Copy this record and your share link, and submit both in
Canvas for Practice 12." One sentence of encouragement. Begin: greet me, ask
my first name, give E1.
Submit the wrap-up record plus your share link by the end of the week. Credit is for doing the reps, not for a perfect 6/6.
Take it to the instrument
Right now: sing do–fa–sol, stop, hold the lean one full breath — then land it on do once and on la once. Today's loop just started.
