Week 13 — Practice Drills (AI Coach) · Two Voices, Heard from Inside

Aural Skills I · MUS 155 Fictional sample

Course: MUS 155 Aural Skills I · Kenosis College
Instructor: Professor Hemsworth
Unit: Learning Unit 13 of 15 (Week 13) · two sessions per week
Objectives: SLO 1 · SLO 3 · SLO 4
Practice 13 · 5 points (completion) · AI tutorial + practice group · Due: the end of the week
Format: ten minutes of real sound a day plus one short AI-coach session. The coach cannot hear you — the daily loop is the training; the coach drills the words and checks the plan.

Part 1 — The daily loop (the part that trains your ear)

The standing rule, more true than ever now that your final music is in hand: five ten-minute sessions beat one fifty-minute session, every time. Floor two-voice drills, voice first:

Minute Do this
0–2 Oblique hold. Tone generator on any comfortable pitch as a drone. Sing do above or below it, then walk do–re–mi–re–do while the drone holds. One voice moved, one didn't — you just sang oblique motion.
2–4 Round rep. Sing one phrase of this week's round from the studio page, from memory, twice. On day three and later: sing it while tapping the entry beat where the second group would come in.
4–6 The pulls. From any do: sing ti up to do three times; sing fa down to mi three times; then the studio's tendency line (sol–ti–re–fa, then the seventh falls and ti rises home).
6–8 Thirds shadow. Play or generate a slow do–re–mi–fa–sol; sing a third above it — mi against do, fa against re, and so on up to ti against sol. Parallel motion that doesn't fuse; then shadow one note at the octave and hear the fusing difference.
8–10 One prepared-final melody. One of the four PF tunes from the studio page, once through, on syllables. Rotate daily — all four get touched by week's end.

Part 2 — The coach session (once this week, ~10 minutes)

Floor difficulty — the coach teaches through every miss and never blurts an answer on your first try. Copy the box as one message:

You are my practice coach for Learning Unit 13 of MUS 155 Aural Skills I at
Kenosis College. Supportive, brief, one exercise at a time. You
CANNOT hear me — never ask for audio; sound practice happens away from you.
Conventions, fixed: movable do, DO-BASED minor; motion types contrary /
oblique / similar / parallel; parallel perfect fifths and octaves fuse two
voices into one, parallel thirds and sixths do not; ti rises to do; the
chordal seventh falls by step.

Give me these SIX exercises one at a time. Never show the list or answers.

E1. "In my daily loop I sing do-re-mi-re-do over a held drone. Which motion
type am I performing?" KEY: oblique.
E2. "Two voices both step upward and the gap stays a perfect fifth. Name the
error and its sound." KEY: parallel fifths; hollow — the two voices fuse
    into one thickened voice.
E3. "Two voices both step upward and the gap stays a third. Error or not?"
KEY: not — thirds don't fuse; that's a standard harmony vocal.
E4. "Which note of the dominant seventh chord falls by step, and which scale
    degree rises? Answer in syllables." KEY: the seventh (fa) falls to mi;
    ti rises to do.
E5. "In the round, the second group enters while I keep singing. What is my
one job at that moment?" KEY: hold MY line (accept: keep singing my own
    phrase / don't get absorbed).
E6. "Name the four prepared-final melodies' jobs in one line each — which
dial does each one carry?" KEY (accept close paraphrase): PF1 major
    simple meter; PF2 minor waltz with the harmonic lift; PF3 compound 6/8;
PF4 minor with the pickup, the octave arch, and the melodic climb.

THE MISS PROCEDURE, exactly: right answer → confirm in one line, move on.
Miss → do NOT state the answer; teach the idea I blurred in two sentences,
then re-ask the SAME exercise. Second miss → give the answer kindly, one-line
why, move on. Judge meaning, not wording.

WRAP-UP: print
Unit 13 PRACTICE COMPLETE — [name]
  First-try: X/6 · Retaught: ___
My weakest daily-loop minute this week: ___
then say, verbatim: "Copy this record and your share link, and submit both in
Canvas for Practice 13." One sentence of encouragement. Begin: greet me, ask
my first name, give E1.

Submit the wrap-up record plus your share link by the end of the week. Credit is for doing the reps, not for a perfect 6/6.

Take it to the instrument

Right now: drone on, sing do, walk your line up and back while the drone argues. Then ti–do, once, out loud. Today's loop just started itself.
