Week 14 — Drill Plan · Embellishment and the Outer Voices

Aural Skills I · MUS 155 Fictional sample

Course: MUS 155 Aural Skills I · Kenosis College
Instructor: Professor Hemsworth
Unit: Learning Unit 14 of 15 (Week 14) · two sessions per week
Objectives: SLO 1 · SLO 2 · SLO 3 · SLO 5
Sessions: session 1 · session 2 (Skills Check 14 in the last quarter hour of session 2; the break maintenance protocol is issued this week — the break sits between this unit and the final)

Instructor-facing. Excluded from the student cartridge. Every stimulus named below is notated, with its performance script, in _keys/KEY-stimulus-sheet-week-14.md; the plain frame, the printed flowered frame, and the suspension lean live in the student P file (fences 1–3) — nothing musical is spelled out here.

Named in Music Theory I: contour, step vs. leap, climax; the six non-chord tones, the suspension figured 4-3; the augmented-second trap in harmonic minor; embellishing a two-voice frame.

First time teaching this

The point of the LU: the last new-material week, and it closes the loop the course opened in Unit 1 — sound before symbol, one final time. Students sing a plain frame they understand completely, then hear it flowered; they must describe each extra note (walks through, dips and returns, hangs on and falls) before the theory names attach. Three NCTs get drilled — passing, neighbor, suspension; the other three of the morning's six stay named-only, and that is deliberate scope, not an omission.

The one thing that must land: the suspension lean, in the body. A student who has held a note while the bass walked out from under it, felt the fourth lean, and released it down to the third owns the concept forever; a student who only heard it defined owns a flashcard. Protect the lean drill's minutes.

The most common way it goes wrong: naming too early. The instinct is to say "that's a passing tone" the moment someone points; the design is to collect descriptions first and attach names after. Second trap: under-protecting session 2's last ten minutes — the break maintenance card is the break mitigation and it must be issued out loud, warmly, not discovered in Canvas.

The do ritual

Every key change starts with the ritual — play I–IV–V–I, sing do, the class sings do–mi–sol–mi–do back (minor: do–me–sol–me–do). Defined in full in Unit 1's plan. This week it runs in C, G, F, D, a minor, and d minor as the stimuli move.

Drill sequence

Session 1 — the frame, the flowers, the lean.

Time Segment Stimulus / tempo Reps Words to say
0:00–0:03 The do ritual C major, 76 BPM 1 cycle "Last new-material week. Same door."
0:03–0:15 The frame, two groups P fence 1 at 60→66 BPM 2 passes per side, then swap "Last week's game, this week's skeleton. Learn it plain — everything today happens against this."
0:15–0:32 Frame-then-flowers FL1, then FL2, 66 BPM 2 hearings each "I play; you point. Where is the note the frame didn't have? Don't name it — tell me what it's doing." Collect descriptions, THEN attach: passing, neighbor, suspension.
0:32–0:47 The suspension lean P fence 3 at 56→60 BPM 3+ passes per side "Group 2, you're the bass — walk. Group 1, hold do. Feel it lean when the floor moves. Fall to ti on three. That lean is the suspension; the numbers 4–3 are the two intervals you just sang."
0:47–1:00 NCT-ID minis N1–N4 at 66 BPM 2 hearings each "One extra note each. Step in? Step out and back? Or held in? Passing, neighbor, suspension — and for the last one: major or minor?"
1:00–1:10 The flowered frame, sung P fence 2 at 60→66 BPM 2 passes "Now you sing the flowers. Upper line, both groups; the bass is mine at the piano."
1:10–1:15 Close + assignments "Tutorial done? Good — the grid is your vocabulary in session 2. Practice page starts tonight; ten minutes."

Session 2 — outer voices, climax, the lurch, the card, the check.

Time Segment Stimulus / tempo Reps Words to say
0:00–0:03 The do ritual G major, 76 BPM 1 cycle "Door open."
0:03–0:10 Lean warm-up P fence 3 at 60 BPM 1 pass per side "Once each way. Feel it lean; let it fall."
0:10–0:32 Outer-voice dictation D1 at 60 BPM, four hearings per script scripted "Four bars, two staves — the full version of last week's preview. Bass first: it's the spine. The quick notes come last, because now you know what they are."
0:32–0:44 Climax hearing R1, R2 at 63 BPM 2 hearings each "One question per tune: where's the peak, and what happens right after the widest leap? Real music does what our drills do — up by leap, down by step."
0:44–0:52 The lurch pair K1, K2 at 66→72 BPM sing-back ×2 each "Sing the lurch. Feel how wide le to ti really is — three semitones on one letter. Now the fix: la–ti. Smooth. You've dodged this trap since Unit 5; today it has a name."
0:52–0:55 Break maintenance card issued P Part 4 read aloud "Ten minutes a day, five days, voice alone, no equipment: ritual from memory, one prepared melody, one interval ladder, one flip. Two-line log, honor system — it comes back with your Unit 15 prep. Nine days of silence before a cumulative final is the one opponent in this course I can't drill away; you can."
0:55–1:09 Skills Check 14 Stimuli 1–8 per script, 60–72 BPM scripted script only — identical administration matters
1:09–1:15 Close the frame, plain, both groups 1 "You can hear the skeleton and the flowers now. Recordings and practice close at the end of the week — then the break, then we put all fifteen weeks on stage."

When they miss it

Drill Error mode — what it sounds like Immediate corrective
Frame-then-flowers Names before descriptions — "passing tone!" shouted at the first hearing Take the name off the table: "Right family, wrong order — tell me what it does." Replay just the bar in question.
Frame-then-flowers Flower missed entirely — the room hears the frame and nothing else Play the frame bar, then the flowered bar, back to back twice. Contrast, not repetition, exposes the extra note.
Suspension lean The hold breaks — group 1 re-sings do at the barline instead of tying Conduct the tie with a closed fist through the barline; open the hand only at the resolution. One silent-gesture pass fixes most rooms.
Suspension lean Resolution overshoots — the fall lands on la instead of ti Stop; sing ti alone against the re-struck bass; then just beats 3–4; then the whole drill. Shrink to the landing.
NCT-ID Neighbor called passing — every stepwise extra is "passing" Replay the two minis as a pair: "Did it come out the other side, or come back where it started?" The pair is the teacher.
Outer-voice dictation Melody chased first — top staff full, bass staff empty Re-state the order: bass is hearing 2, alone. Replay hearing 2 with the right hand silent if the room needs proof.
The lurch Lurch smoothed over — the class sings la–ti when K1 asked for le–ti Play K1's third and fourth notes alone, twice, exaggerated. The wrongness is the lesson; don't rescue it.

Escalation path

Drop one layer, never the week: frame-then-flowers falls back to ONE flower per hearing (play FL1 bar by bar); the lean falls back to oblique holding — class holds do while you play the moving bass alone (Unit 1's hold-your-do, final form); NCT-ID falls back to N1 vs N2 only (through vs back); outer-voice dictation falls back to bass alone, two bars. Re-establish tonic the same way every time: stop, run the do ritual in the working key, resume. Abandon criterion: a segment still failing after two escalated attempts gets banked — say "the final doesn't test this in isolation; your ear has the seed" — and log it. The named pick-up hook: Unit 15 re-enters everything here — the climax and contour hearing returns inside the at-sight final prep, the outer-voice texture returns in the Nashville bass-line drills, and the prepared-set polish assumes the break card kept voices warm. Nothing is lost; Unit 15 is built to collect it.

Tempo table

Drill First pass Target
The do ritual 76 BPM 76 BPM (never varies)
The frame / flowered frame (P fences 1–2) 60 BPM 66 BPM
Frame-then-flowers hearings (FL1, FL2) 66 BPM 66 BPM
The suspension lean (P fence 3) 56 BPM 60 BPM
NCT-ID minis N1–N4 66 BPM 66 BPM
Outer-voice dictation D1 (D2 make-up) 60 BPM 60 BPM (fixed by script)
Climax excerpts R1–R2 63 BPM 63 BPM
The lurch pair K1–K2 66 BPM 72 BPM
Skills-check stimuli as scripted, 60–72 BPM fixed by script

Rotation note (P states it to students): solo hearings run inside the frame and lean segments — 6 to 8 students per session hold a line alone against the piano, keeping the rotation that reaches every voice about every two and a half weeks at 36; in a small room, everyone, both days. The ledger should now show every student heard solo at least five times this term; Unit 15's hearing schedule assumes it is current.
