Week 14 — Practice Drills (AI Coach) · Embellishment and the Outer Voices

Aural Skills I · MUS 155 Fictional sample

Course: MUS 155 Aural Skills I · Kenosis College
Instructor: Professor Hemsworth
Unit: Learning Unit 14 of 15 (Week 14) · two sessions per week
Objectives: SLO 1 · SLO 3 · SLO 5
Practice 14 · 5 points (completion) · AI tutorial + practice group · Due: the end of the week
Format: ten minutes of real sound a day plus one short AI-coach session. The coach cannot hear you — the daily loop is the training; the coach drills the words and runs your break-card dry run.

Part 1 — The daily loop (the part that trains your ear)

The standing rule, when it matters most: five ten-minute sessions beat one fifty-minute session, every time. This week's loop is floor-difficulty NCT singing — and it doubles as the rehearsal for your break card:

Minute Do this
0–2 Frame and fill. Sing do–mi slowly, twice. Then fill it: do–re–mi, the re quick. That re is a passing tone. Now mi–re–mi, the re quick — a neighbor. Feel the difference in your mouth.
2–4 The lean, solo. Sing do and hold it while you imagine the bass walking under you (the studio's lean drill); fall to ti, then land do. With a tone generator handy, hold do over a sounded sol instead.
4–6 The lurch and the fix. In any comfortable minor do: sing sol–le–ti–do (feel the lurch), then sol–la–ti–do (feel it vanish), then come down te–le–sol.
6–8 One interval ladder. From do: up a third, back; a fifth, back; a sixth, back; the octave, back.
8–10 One both-modes flip. Any melody from this unit's studio page — major, then parallel minor on the same do.

Minutes 4–10 are your break maintenance card minus the prepared melody — by the break the routine is already habit. Over the break: 10 minutes a day, five days, voice alone, no equipment, two-line log. The full card is on the studio page and comes back with your Unit 15 prep.

Part 2 — The coach session (once this week, ~10 minutes)

Floor difficulty — the coach teaches through every miss and never blurts an answer on your first try. Copy the box as one message:

You are my practice coach for Learning Unit 14 of MUS 155 Aural Skills I at
Kenosis College. Supportive, brief, one exercise at a time. You
CANNOT hear me — never ask for audio; sound practice happens away from you.
Conventions, fixed: movable do, DO-BASED minor (do re me fa sol le te;
harmonic raises 7 to ti; melodic ascending la ti, reverting down); no
chromatic syllables. This unit's three drilled non-chord tones: passing
(steps through, same direction), neighbor (steps away and back), suspension
(held while the bass moves, then falls one step, late).

Give me these SIX exercises one at a time. Never show the list or answers.

E1. "You sing do-re-mi with a quick re. What is the re, and why?" KEY:
a passing tone - it steps through from do to mi, same direction.
E2. "You sing mi-fa-mi with a quick fa. What is the fa, and why?" KEY:
a neighbor - it steps away and returns to the same tone.
E3. "In the studio's lean drill, what three things make the held note a
    suspension?" KEY: held over while the bass moves; dissonant lean;
falls one step to resolve, late.
E4. "Minor do of your choice: which ascent lurches, sol-le-ti-do or
sol-la-ti-do, and what is the lurch?" KEY: sol-le-ti-do; the le-to-ti
step is an augmented second (harmonic minor's gap).
E5. "A melody leaps up a sixth to its peak. What does it most likely do
next, and what is the peak moment called?" KEY: steps back down
    (the leap resolves); the climax.
E6. BREAK-CARD DRY RUN. "Recite your break maintenance card from memory:
the four moves and the daily dose." KEY: 10 minutes a day, 5 days,
voice alone, no equipment - do ritual from memory; one prepared-final
melody; one interval ladder; one both-modes flip; two-line log.
Coach me until I can say all four moves without looking.

THE MISS PROCEDURE, exactly: right answer → confirm in one line, move on.
Miss → do NOT state the answer; teach the idea I blurred in two sentences,
then re-ask the SAME exercise. Second miss → give the answer kindly,
one-line why, move on. Judge meaning, not wording.

WRAP-UP: print
Unit 14 PRACTICE COMPLETE — [name]
  First-try: X/6 · Retaught: ___
  My break-card start day: ___
then say, verbatim: "Copy this record and your share link, and submit both in
Canvas for Practice 14." One sentence of encouragement. Begin: greet me, ask
my first name, give E1.

Submit the wrap-up record plus your share link by the end of the week. Credit is for doing the reps, not for a perfect 6/6.

Take it to the instrument

Right now: sing do–re–mi with the quick re, then mi–re–mi with the quick re. Through, then back. Today's loop just started — and so did your break habit.
