Week 14 — Module Framing · Embellishment and the Outer Voices
Course: MUS 155 Aural Skills I · Kenosis College
Instructor: Professor Hemsworth
Unit: Learning Unit 14 of 15 (Week 14) · two sessions per week
Objectives: SLO 1 · SLO 2 · SLO 3 · SLO 5
Two pieces: (A) the Unit 14 Overview page and (B) the Announcement. All timing uses the course's tokens.
(A) Week 14 Overview — Start Here
Welcome to Unit 14: Embellishment and the Outer Voices
The last new-material week. You sing a plain two-voice frame, then hear it flowered — and you point at each extra note and say what it does before you name it: passing, neighbor, suspension. Add the four-bar outer-voice dictation and the climax hearing on two great melodies. And because the break sits just before the final: your break maintenance card — 10 minutes a day, five days, voice alone.
Work the table top to bottom.
| # | Do this | Type | Points | Due |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Tutorial 14 — AI tutor: the approach/leave grid for the three drilled NCTs | Tutorial | 10 | before session 1 |
| 2 | Drill Studio 14 — frame-then-flowers, the suspension lean, outer-voice dictation | Studio | 20 | in session |
| 3 | Practice 14 — daily NCT loop + AI coach (with the break-card dry run) | Practice | 5 | the end of the week |
| 4 | Skills Check 14 — 8 live-hearing items, in class, session 2, closed to AI | Skills check | 8 | session 2 |
| 5 | Submission 14 — frame pair + the lean recordings + NCT diagnosis | Submission | 100 | the end of the week |
The late-work policy is in the syllabus.
Why this makes you a better musician
Every great melody is a frame wearing flowers. Now you can hear which notes are skeleton and which are grace — so you learn songs faster, harmonize smarter, and write the fill that leans exactly where you want it.
How to succeed: the daily loop now, the break card next week — ten minutes protects fourteen weeks.
(B) Announcement — Week 14
Subject: Point at the extra note — then keep your ear warm
Hi everyone,
The last new material, and the most musical week yet: sing a plain frame, hear it decorated, name the decorations by what they do. Session 2 brings the last weekly skills check — and your break maintenance card. Nine days of silence sit between us and the final, and a singing voice fades fast; 10 minutes a day over the break keeps it all. Two-line log, honor system — I trust you with it.
Do Tutorial 14 before session 1; recordings, practice, and diagnosis close at the end of the week. Next: Cumulative — the movable frame — everything, on stage.
See you in the studio,
Professor Hemsworth
