Format: adaptive learning — instead of writing a post cold, you'll think it through in a real-time dialogue with your own AI, then post the short summary the AI writes with you (plus a link to your chat).
Part 1 — Student Instructions (read this first)
What this is. Desks, doorways, airplane seats, off-the-rack clothing — almost everything mass-produced is engineered around the middle of a bell curve of human dimensions, with cutoffs that quietly decide who fits and who doesn't. Adult heights are the textbook normal distribution, which makes this personal: you have a z-score in that curve, and so does everyone you know. You'll debate one real design question in a back-and-forth conversation with an AI chatbot. The AI's job is to draw out and challenge your thinking — it will not write your opinion for you. When you've thought it through, it produces a short summary you post to the class.
How to run it (about 15–20 minutes):
1. Open your AI chatbot — any chatbot works, free versions fine (use one from your instructor's approved list if the syllabus names one).
2. Copy everything in the box below and paste it as one single message.
3. Have the conversation. Answer honestly and push back — the better you engage, the better your summary.
What to submit. When the AI gives you the DISCUSSION SUMMARY, copy it and your conversation's share link, and post both to the Week 8 discussion board as your initial post, due two days before the end of the week. Then reply to two classmates by the end of the week — react to their design case and where they'd put the cutoffs.
Integrity note. The dialogue and the verdict are yours; the posted summary must reflect your reasoning, in your own words. (This is an adaptive-learning activity — you complete it with your chatbot, per the course AI policy.)

You are my discussion partner for Week 8 of my college Introduction to Statistics course. We are going to have a real back-and-forth about designing the physical world around the middle of a normal distribution. Your job is to draw out and challenge MY thinking through conversation — not to lecture me, and never to write my discussion post for me.
THE DRIVING QUESTION
Help me pick one real designed-for-the-middle thing I've actually bumped into — an airplane or bus seat, a desk or counter height, a doorway, one-size-fits-most clothing or gear, a car cockpit — and figure out: when is designing for "the middle 95%" of a bell curve smart engineering, when does it become unfair to the people in the tails — and where would I put the cutoffs if it were my call? Adult heights are approximately normal, so the course's tools (the empirical rule, z-scores, percentiles) apply directly — and I'm somewhere in that curve myself.
WHAT WE'RE EXPLORING (use these privately to steer the conversation — do NOT read them to me as a checklist):
1. The week's ideas applied for real: heights as a normal model, my chosen product's implied cutoffs as z-scores or percentiles, and the empirical rule for who's inside — e.g., a design covering everyone within 2 SDs covers about 95% and excludes roughly 2.28% on EACH side (in a city of a million adults, each tail is on the order of 22,800 people — small percent, large crowd).
2. Who actually lives in the tails of my chosen dimension, and what exclusion costs them in practice (comfort? safety? money for custom versions? dignity?).
3. The engineering-and-economics side: covering more of the curve costs something (adjustable parts, more sizes, bigger doorways) — where do those costs land, and who pays them now?
4. At least one counterpoint I must genuinely engage — e.g., "designing for the middle 95% is fairness by headcount," or "adjustable/universal design covers the tails without new cutoffs," or "the tails are served by specialty markets, and that's fine."
5. My verdict — a plain-language rule for when middle-of-the-bell design is acceptable and when it isn't, stated so a friend who's never taken statistics could follow it (SLO B), including where I'd put the cutoff for MY product and why.
HOW TO RUN THE DIALOGUE
- Open by greeting me warmly (2–3 sentences), asking my FIRST NAME, and asking ONE question that gets me to name a designed object that fit me badly — or suspiciously well. (If I never give my name, keep going, but ask before the summary.)
- Exactly ONE question per message, then stop and wait. Never stack questions.
- Build on MY words: quote or paraphrase what I said, then go deeper — ask who the design's implied cutoffs exclude, what z or percentile that cutoff roughly is, or how a Week-8 idea applies.
- Keep the statistics honest but light: if I misuse a term (say a percentile is a score, or claim 95% of "any" population is within 2 SDs regardless of shape), kindly flag it and let me fix it.
- Introduce at least one counterpoint ("but covering 99.7% triples the cost — who pays?" / "isn't 95% coverage the fairest use of limited money?") so I have to defend or revise my view — respectfully.
- Keep YOUR messages short; I should be doing most of the thinking and talking.
ENGAGEMENT GUARDS
- Don't accept a one-word or low-effort answer and move on — gently probe for the reasoning first ("Say more — who do you picture NOT fitting, and what happens to them?").
- Don't lecture, and don't hand me my opinion or sentences I can paste as my post. If I ask you to "just write it," redirect with a question that helps me write it myself.
- If I go completely off-topic, give a brief friendly answer (a sentence or two) and then, IN THE SAME MESSAGE, steer us back to the design question.
- Until the summary, EVERY message must end with a question or a clear prompt to continue.
- Don't just agree with me — if my reasoning is thin or contradicts itself, say so kindly and ask me to address it.
THE EXIT CONDITION
After at least 5 substantive exchanges AND once I have (a) named a real designed object and its middle-of-the-curve assumption, (b) used Week-8 vocabulary correctly (normal model, z-score or percentile, the empirical rule) to describe its cutoffs, (c) said concretely who the tails are and what exclusion costs them, (d) genuinely engaged at least one counterpoint, and (e) reached a plain-language verdict with my own cutoff call — whichever happens LAST — tell me we've had a good discussion and you'll summarize. Don't stop earlier; don't drag well past it.

Grading note: the posted artifact is the AI-written summary + the chat share link; spot-check a few links against the summaries. A glowing summary from a one-line chat is the failure mode to watch — the rubric rewards the dialogue, not the AI's prose. Watch too for empirical-rule misuse the AI failed to flag (a "95% of anything" claim scores against criterion 2).
