Week at a Glance

Segment 1 — Ear first: play before naming (8 min) · Session 1 opens

Hook (no notation on screen yet). Play two notes at the piano — a low one, then a high one. "Which was higher?" Everyone knows. Play two closer together. Still everyone knows. Then: "Sing me the opening of a song everybody owns" — Ah! vous dirai-je, maman (the Twinkle tune) works; the room can sing it cold. Nobody needed paper for any of that.

  • "Your ear already does this work. What it doesn't have yet is a way to write down what it knows — so tonight's idea survives until tomorrow, and so you can hand it to another musician."
  • The promise (say it, then put it on the board): "By the end of this week you can give any note an exact address — F♯4, not 'the high one' — find it on a keyboard, and find it on the staff."
  • State the spine out loud: you already hear this; we're going to name what you already know. This whole first stretch of the course — Foundations, Week 1–Week 7 — runs on that rule, and the midterm in week 8 is where the whole vocabulary gets certified. There's a finish line, and it's visible from here.

Memory hook: "Notation is a map, not a test. Maps exist so you can go back."


Segment 2 — The keyboard is the map (12 min)

Plain language first. Put the paper keyboard maps out. The piano looks like an endless row of keys, but it's one small neighborhood repeating: black keys in a group of two, then a group of three, over and over.

  • The pattern is the whole trick. Find any group of two black keys: the white key just to its left is always C. The white key inside the group of two is D. Just to the right of the two: E. The three-black-key group is fenced by F on its left and B on its right, with G and A inside.
  • Only seven letters exist: A B C D E F G, then the alphabet starts over. After G comes A. Always.
  • Interaction (2 min): "Everyone touch every C on your paper keyboard." Then every G. Then every E. Thirty seconds each, neighbors check neighbors.

Misconception + cure:

  • "There must be more than seven letters — pianos have 88 keys."
    Cure: the 88 keys are the same seven letters at different heights. Same street plan, different blocks. What tells the blocks apart is the next segment: the octave number.

Segment 3 — The address system: C4 and the octave number (11 min)

Plain language first. "E" is a street name; there are lots of Es. A full address is letter + octave number: E4 is one exact key. This course uses scientific pitch names, and the anchor is middle C = C4 — the C nearest the middle of the piano.

  • Octaves are numbered from C up to B. Every note from a given C up to the B above it shares that C's number.
  • The number changes when you pass B and land on C — never anywhere else. Below middle C sits B3; then C4, D4, E4 … B4; the very next key up is C5.
  • Fully worked example (walk it on the room keyboard, out loud): start at C4 and step up the white keys: C4 · D4 · E4 · F4 · G4 · A4 · B4 · C5. Say the moment the number ticks over. Then go down from C4 one key: B3 — new number, because we crossed the C boundary going down.
  • Typing convention (they will type addresses in quizzes and AI sessions all term): letter, accidental if any, number — C4, F#4, Bb3. On paper we write F♯4 and B♭3; at a keyboard we type F#4 and Bb3. Both are correct course spelling.

Misconception + cure:

  • "The octave number changes at A — A is the first letter of the alphabet."
    Cure: alphabetically reasonable, musically wrong. The odometer rolls over at C. Drill the boundary both directions: B3 → C4 going up, C4 → B3 going down. (This is the single most-missed detail on the quiz. Say so.)

Segment 4 — The staff: five lines and a brace (14 min)

Plain language first. The staff is the map we actually read from: five lines, and every line and every space is one letter name. Move line → space → line, and you're walking the musical alphabet one letter at a time.

  • The treble clef marks the staff we use for higher notes; the bass clef marks the staff for lower notes. Put both together, joined by a brace, and you have the grand staff — the piano's home notation.
  • Middle C (C4) lives in the gap between the two staves, on its own short added line — a ledger line. Ledger lines extend the staff whenever a note runs off the top or bottom.
  • Show it, then describe it in words (every example this term gets said in plain English too):

And the bass side: four whole notes walking down — F3 on the fourth line of the bass staff, E3 in the space below it, D3 on the middle line, C3 in the second space. Same alphabet, lower neighborhood.

Misconception + cure:

  • "The staff is a picture of the piano tilted on its side — one line per key."
    Cure: the staff and the keyboard are two different maps of the same terrain, drawn at different grid sizes. The staff steps by letter name (C to D is one step whether or not a black key sits between them); the keyboard steps by half step, black keys included. That's why the staff has no separate line for F♯ — accidentals handle that, in Segment 6.

Segment 5 — Half steps and whole steps (12 min)

Ear first. Play E4 then F4. Play C4 then D4. "Same size trip?" The room hears that the second one is wider before anyone can say why. Name what they heard: half step (the very closest distance — one key to its immediate neighbor, black keys count) and whole step (two half steps).

  • On the white keys, most neighbors have a black key between them — those pairs are a whole step apart. Two pairs don't: E–F and B–C. No black key between them; each pair is a built-in half step. (This comes straight off the keyboard map — have them touch both gaps.)
  • Worked example: a whole step up from F4: skip F♯4, land on G4. A half step up from E4: the very next key is F4 — white to white, no black key in the way.

  • Interaction — white-key pair drill (3 min): call out pairs (C–D? G–A? E–F? B–C?), class answers "half" or "whole" on fingers: one finger = half, two = whole. Then reverse it: "find me a half step that starts on a white key and ends on a black one" — F to F♯ works; let them discover it.

Misconception + cure:

  • "A step is a step — C to D and E to F are the same size."
    Cure: letters step evenly; sound doesn't. The keyboard shows the truth: C–D has a key between; E–F doesn't. Letter distance and sound distance are different rulers, and the whole course rides that difference.

Segment 6 — Accidentals, enharmonic twins, and the AI-critique moment (18 min) · Session 1 closes (~75)

Plain language first — the five accidentals.

  • Sharp (♯) — raise a half step. Typed #: F♯4 / F#4.
  • Flat (♭) — lower a half step. Typed b: B♭3 / Bb3.
  • Natural (♮) — cancel; back to the plain letter.
  • Double sharp (𝄪) — raise two half steps. Typed x: F𝄪4 / Fx4 — played where G4 lives.
  • Double flat (𝄫) — lower two half steps. Typed bb: B𝄫3 / Bbb3 — played where A3 lives.

Misconception + cure #1:

  • "Sharp means black key."
    Cure: usually — but E♯4 is a white key (the F4 key) and B♯3 is a white key (the C4 key), because E–F and B–C have no black key between them. Same for C♭ and F♭ going down. A sharp raises a half step, wherever that half step lands.

Enharmonic spelling — one key, two names. Play G♯4/A♭4 twice: "same sound?" Yes. Same written note? No.

  • Misconception + cure #2:"Same key, so same note."Cure: same sound, different spelling — like there / their. In this course, spelling carries meaning (which key you're in, which direction a line is leaning), so enharmonic means "sounds alike," never "equals." From Week 4 on, the right spelling is the difference between a scale that works and one that breaks.

AI-critique moment (2 min, live on the projector). Paste into a chatbot: "Is G♯4 the same note as A♭4? One sentence." Read what comes back. Chatbots routinely collapse the two into "the same note" — the exact misconception we just cured. "All term, the tool drafts and you judge. Your tutorial before the studio has a scored step where you audit the AI against a vetted answer sheet — this is the skill."

Why this makes you a better musician

Precision is a favor to every musician you work with. "It's F♯4, not 'the high one'" ends a rehearsal argument in four syllables — your section leader can act on an address, not on a wave of the hand. The riff you figured out at midnight gets written down — four addresses on a card — so it still exists in the morning instead of dissolving with your sleep. When a chord chart says C/E, you can tell the bass player exactly which E. Once every note has an address, you never lose an idea again, because you can file it, text it, and hand it to somebody. The studio is exactly this, practiced until it's fast.

Callback + tease + hand-off.

  • Callback: "Everything today was the ear leading and the name following. That order never changes in this course."
  • Tease: "Next unit — Pulse and page: the note names get a clock. How long is each note? Your foot already knows; we'll name that too."
  • Hand-off: read the chapter if you haven't; Tutorial 1 with your AI tutor is due before Week 1's second session so the studio can build on it; practice set, quiz, discussion, and the Twenty Addresses assignment close the end of Week 1.

Segment 7 — Studio: "Find it on the keyboard" (55 min) · Session 2

Run from the studio sheet (P-studio-week-01). Shape, for planning: ear-first higher/lower rounds → locate-and-name rounds at the paper keyboards → address-writing rounds → each student builds the grand-staff reference card they keep all term. The studio is the payoff section enacted: hear it, find it, name it, write it. 20 points, graded in session; the async make-up path (full credit) is on the studio sheet.


Segment 8 — The Week-1 diagnostic (20 min, ungraded) · Session 2 closes

Ten short items — pitch reading on the staff, rhythm echo, key-signature recognition — administered from the studio sheet. It never touches the gradebook. Its whole job is to tell Professor Hemsworth on day two who already reads fluently, who reads slowly, and who is starting fresh, so the next six units meet the room where it actually is. Say that to the students in exactly that spirit: this is the course listening to them.


Instructor FAQ — common stumbles

The table below lists predictable Week 1 questions and quick cures.

Student says / does Quick cure
"Is the A above middle C really still in octave 4?" Yes. Walk it: C4 · D4 · E4 · F4 · G4 · A4 · B4 — everything from a C up to the next B shares that C's number. The number only ticks over at the next C (C5).
Writes B4 for the note just below middle C. The boundary works both directions: one key down from C4 crosses out of octave 4 — that note is B3. Have them touch the keys and say it aloud: "B3, C4" going up; "C4, B3" going down.
"Why does F♯ exist AND G♭? Pick one!" Same key, two jobs. Which name is right depends on the musical neighborhood (the key you're in, the direction of the line) — that's Week 4's payoff. For now: two spellings, one sound, never interchangeable on paper.
"E♯ isn't a real note." It's as real as the F key it lives on. Sharp = up a half step from E; the next key happens to be white. B♯, C♭, F♭ — same story.
Counts a whole step by touching three keys ("C, C♯, D — that's three"). Count the moves, not the keys: C→C♯ is one half step, C♯→D is another. Two moves = one whole step.
"Do I write the octave number on every note?" In typed answers, yes — the address is letter + accidental + number. On the staff, position is the octave; no number needed.
Reads the staff bottom-up like a keyboard laid sideways. Two maps, two grids: the staff steps by letter, the keyboard by half step. If the staff were the piano tilted, it would need a line for every black key — it doesn't.
"Can I use my guitar instead of the piano for all this?" Yes — every studio task has an own-instrument path. The paper keyboard is still worth learning: it's the one instrument where the map is printed on the hardware.

Scope flag

This outline stays inside Week 1's twelve ledger concepts (staff/clefs/grand staff, ledger lines, letter names, octave designation, keyboard map, half/whole steps, accidentals incl. doubles, enharmonic spelling) plus the course notation convention Week 1 is chartered to define. Duration letters are named in the convention but not taught — rhythm is Pulse and page's job. The the second session diagnostic deliberately samples ahead (rhythm echo, key signatures) because its purpose is placement information, and it is ungraded by design.
