You already hear this. We're going to name what you already know.
That sentence is the whole design of this course, so let's test it right now. Think of a song you can play or sing without any paper — a worship set opener, a riff you worked out in your bedroom, the melody your choir warmed up with last spring. Your ear already knows things about it that are precise: it knows when a note is higher than the one before, it knows when two notes are close together versus far apart, it knows when someone in the room plays the wrong one. That's not vague intuition. That's data. What your ear doesn't have yet is a filing system — a way to write down what it knows so the idea survives until morning and can be handed to another musician.
This unit builds the filing system. By the end of this chapter you will be able to: name every white key on a keyboard from the black-key pattern alone; give any note its exact address (the kind that looks like C4 or F♯4); find those addresses on the staff — treble, bass, and the grand staff; tell a half step from a whole step on the keyboard and by ear; read all five accidentals; and explain why G♯4 and A♭4 live on the same piano key but are two different written notes. None of it requires any prior reading experience. That's by design — this course assumes an ear, not a bookshelf.
One more promise, because it's fair to want a finish line: units 1 through 7 are the Foundations arc, and the midterm in unit 8 is where that whole vocabulary gets certified. Foundations isn't a preamble. It's a destination with a date on it.
Where we are
This is the first unit, so there is nothing behind us yet — this chapter is the ground floor. But you are not starting from zero: you're starting from years of listening. Every section below follows the same order — sound first, name second, notation third — because that's the order your musicianship actually grew in.
How this course writes music down
Before any content, the tools. This section defines the notation convention for the entire course — every later unit, every quiz, every AI session uses exactly what's defined here.
Pitch names are scientific. A full pitch name is a letter (A–G), an accidental if one applies, and an octave number: C4, F♯4, B♭3. The anchor of the whole system: middle C is C4. When you handwrite or read printed music prose, accidentals look like ♯ and ♭ (and, rarely, 𝄪 for double sharp and 𝄫 for double flat).
When you type, use the keyboard-friendly forms. You will type pitch names constantly this term — in quizzes, in AI tutorials, in assignment answers — so the course has an official typing convention:
- Sharp: type

Both forms are correct course spelling; one is for the page, one is for the keyboard you type on. Answers like F#4 earn full credit everywhere in this course.
Durations get letters too. Starting next unit, note lengths are typed with single letters: w (whole), h (half), q (quarter), e (eighth), s (sixteenth). You don't need them yet — this unit is about which note, not how long — but the convention lives here so there's exactly one place it's defined.
Every example appears three ways. Whenever this course shows you music, you get: (1) the typed notation in a small block, (2) a staff image generated from that exact block, and (3) a plain-English description of what it shows. Three views, one example. If one representation ever seems to disagree with another, tell Professor Hemsworth — the typed block is the source of truth. Here's the pattern, with the first five notes you'll ever address:

In plain English: five long notes climbing step by step from middle C — C4, D4, E4, F4, G4 — written on the treble staff, each one letter higher than the last. (The /w marks each note as a whole note; duration letters get their real introduction next unit.)
The keyboard is a map
Walk up to any piano and it looks like an intimidating wall of keys — 88 of them on a full-size instrument. Here is the secret that collapses all 88 into something you can learn in a minute: it's one small neighborhood, repeating. Look at the black keys. They come in a group of two, then a group of three, then two, then three, all the way up. That pattern never varies, and it's the map key that names everything else.
- Find any group of two black keys. The white key immediately to its left is always C. The white key between the two black keys is D. Immediately to the right of the group: E.
- Find any group of three black keys. The white key just left of it is F; inside the group sit G and A; just right of it is B.
- Then the next two-black-key group begins, and the next C with it.
Musical letter names use only seven letters: A, B, C, D, E, F, G — and then the alphabet wraps around. After G comes A again. Every one of the piano's white keys answers to one of those seven letters, and its position against the black-key groups tells you which.
Why a keyboard, even if you're a singer or a guitarist? Because it's the one instrument with the map printed on the hardware — frets all look alike, vocal cords are invisible. All term, when a spelling question gets confusing, the answer will be: look at the keyboard.
Misconception check. "Seven letters can't be enough — there are 88 keys." The 88 keys are the same seven letters repeating at different heights, the way one street plan repeats across city blocks. What distinguishes this C from that C is the next section's tool: the octave number.
Every note has an address
"E" is a street name, and there are lots of houses on E street. A usable address needs more: E4 — the letter and an octave number. This is the scientific pitch name system defined above, and now we can use it properly.
Middle C is C4. It's the C closest to the middle of a piano keyboard, the one that sits in the gap between the two staves of the grand staff (coming two sections from now). Memorize the pairing now; it anchors everything.
Octave numbers run from each C up to the B above it. All the notes from C4 up through B4 — C4, D4, E4, F4, G4, A4, B4 — share the number 4. Then the very next key up begins the next octave: C5.
Here is the detail that decides more quiz questions than any other in this unit: the octave number changes when you pass from B to C — and nowhere else. Not at A, even though A starts the alphabet. Walk it upward from middle C and say it aloud: C4, D4, E4, F4, G4, A4, B4, C5. Now walk down one key from middle C: you cross the boundary going the other way, and land on B3. One key below middle C is B3, not B4.
Worked example. What is the address of the G above middle C? Start at C4 and climb: C4, D4, E4, F4, G4. We never passed a B-to-C boundary, so the number never changed: G4. What about the E just below middle C? Step down: C4 → B3 (boundary crossed immediately) → A3 → G3 → F3 → E3. Going down, the number drops as soon as you leave C.
Misconception check. "The number changes at A, because A is the first letter." Alphabetically sensible, musically wrong — the odometer rolls over at C. If you remember one arithmetic fact from this unit: B3 sits directly below C4, and B4 directly below C5.
The staff: the map you read from
The keyboard is the map you touch; the staff is the map you read. A staff is five horizontal lines. Every line and every space between lines holds one letter name, and moving line → space → line walks the musical alphabet one letter at a time.
Five lines can't cover a piano, so staves come in registers, each labeled by a clef:
- The treble clef marks a staff used for higher notes — melodies, right hand at the piano, voices and instruments that live above middle C.
- The bass clef marks a staff for lower notes — bass lines, left hand, the low half of the map.
Stack a treble staff over a bass staff, join them with a brace, and you have the grand staff — how piano music is written, and the frame for your reference card in the studio.
Where's middle C? In the gap between the two staves. It's too low for the treble staff and too high for the bass staff, so it gets a short line of its very own: a ledger line. Ledger lines are little staff extensions, drawn one at a time, whenever a note runs off the map — above, below, either staff. Middle C on a ledger line between the staves is the visual anchor of the whole grand staff.
You've already seen C4 through G4 climb the treble staff in the convention section. Here is the bass side of the map:

In plain English: four long notes stepping downward on the bass staff — F3 on the staff's fourth line, E3 in the space just below it, then D3, then C3. Same seven-letter alphabet, lower neighborhood, different clef to say so.
Misconception check. "The staff is a picture of the piano turned sideways — one line per key." Close enough to be dangerous. The staff steps by letter name: C-to-D is one step on the staff whether or not a black key sits between them on the keyboard. The keyboard steps by half step, black keys included. Two maps, two grid sizes, same terrain. If the staff really were the piano tilted, it would need a line for every black key — and it doesn't, because of the next two sections.
Half steps and whole steps
Play any key on a piano, then the key immediately next to it — black or white, no key skipped. That smallest possible move is a half step. Two half steps make a whole step. Your ear already distinguishes them easily; this is naming, not new hearing.
Now the wrinkle that makes music interesting. Look at the white keys on your keyboard map. Most white-key neighbors have a black key between them: C and D, for example, with C♯/D♭ between — so C to D is a whole step (two moves: C to the black key, black key to D). But two white-key pairs have no black key between them:
- E and F
- B and C
Those two pairs are built-in half steps — the closest distance, white to white. You can confirm this without any theory: it's printed on the keyboard. (It also falls straight out of the C major scale's step pattern, which you'll meet in unit 4 — the pattern that makes E–F and B–C half steps is why the black keys are grouped in twos and threes at all.)
Worked examples.
- A whole step up from F4: two half-step moves — F4 to F♯4, F♯4 to G4. Land: G4.
- A half step up from E4: the very next key is white — F4. Done in one move.
- A whole step up from B4: B4 to C5 (half), C5 to C♯5 (half) — and notice the octave number ticked over mid-journey. Land: C♯5.
- A half step down from C4: cross the octave boundary to B3.
One more distinction you'll use in this week's assignment: a half step can be spelled keeping the letter (F4 up to F♯4 — still an F-name) or changing the letter (F4 up to G♭4 — same key, new letter). Both are half steps; which spelling is right depends on musical context, and building that judgment starts in unit 4. For now, learn to produce both on demand.
Misconception check. "C-to-D and E-to-F are both 'one letter apart,' so they're the same distance." Letter distance and sound distance are different rulers. C-to-D is one letter and a whole step; E-to-F is one letter and a half step. The keyboard never lies: look for the black key between.
Accidentals: five ways to mark a key
The seven letters name only the white keys. Accidentals — small marks placed before a note — handle everything else by nudging a letter up or down:
- Sharp (♯, typed
#) — raises the note a half step. F♯4 (F#4) is the black key just right of F4. - Flat (♭, typed
b) — lowers the note a half step. B♭3 (Bb3) is the black key just left of B3. - Natural (♮, typed
nwhen needed) — cancels a sharp or flat; back to the plain letter. - Double sharp (𝄪, typed
x) — raises two half steps. F𝄪4 (Fx4) lands where G4 lives. - Double flat (𝄫, typed
bb) — lowers two half steps. B𝄫3 (Bbb3) lands where A3 lives.
Doubles look exotic, but they're the same idea applied twice — and unit 5's scales genuinely need them. Meet them now, calmly, as vocabulary.
Misconception check. "Sharp means black key." Usually — but not always. Raise E4 a half step and you get E♯4, which is played on the F4 key: a white key. Raise B3 and you get B♯3, played on the C4 key — white again. The same happens going down: C♭5 is the B4 key, F♭4 is the E4 key. A sharp means up a half step, wherever that lands. E♯ and B♯ are as real as the white keys they live on.
Two names, one key: enharmonic spelling
Look at the black key between G4 and A4. Approached from below, it's G♯4 — G raised a half step. Approached from above, it's A♭4 — A lowered a half step. One physical key, two legitimate written names. Pairs like this are called enharmonic spellings: they sound the same and are written differently.

In plain English: the same piano key notated twice on the treble staff — first as G♯4 (a G on the staff's second line, raised by a sharp), then as A♭4 (an A in the second space, lowered by a flat). If you played this, you'd press one key twice and hear one pitch twice; on paper, they are two different notes.
The essential rule, which this course enforces everywhere: enharmonic means "sounds alike," never "equals." G♯4 and A♭4 are like there and their — identical to the ear, different on the page, and absolutely not interchangeable in writing. Which spelling is correct depends on the musical neighborhood: what key you're in, which way the line is moving, what job the note is doing. You'll start making that call in unit 4; this week your job is to produce both spellings of any black key on demand — and to refuse to treat them as the same written note.
This matters immediately: a chatbot will happily call G♯4 and A♭4 "the same note." Your tutorial's scored audit step hunts exactly that collapse — and catching it is theory knowledge.
Every enharmonic respelling in this unit — G♯4/A♭4, F♯4/G♭4, C♯5/D♭5, E♯4/F4, B♯3/C4, C♭5/B4 — follows one procedure: find the key, then name it from the other side. Watch the octave number on the boundary pairs: B♯3 lives on the C4 key (the sharp pushes B3 up across the boundary, but the letter B keeps its own octave number, 3), and C♭5 lives on the B4 key (the flat pulls C5 down, but the letter C keeps the number 5).
Why this makes you a better musician
Here is what this unit's vocabulary buys you, concretely, this month.
You can end a rehearsal argument in four syllables: "It's F♯4, not the high one." A section leader or a bandmate can act on an address; nobody can act on "the note that goes wooo." You can write down the riff you figured out at midnight — four addresses on the back of a receipt — and it still exists in the morning, exactly as you heard it, instead of surviving as a vague shape you half-remember. When a chord chart hands you C/E, you can tell the bass player precisely which note the slash is pointing at, and which octave to put it in. And from now on, no idea you have is ever lost again: anything you can hear, you can file, text to the drummer, and reopen next week. The studio — Find it on the keyboard — is exactly this skill, drilled until it's fast: Professor Hemsworth plays, you locate, name, and write the address, and you leave owning a reference card you'll use all term.
Key terms

Summary
- The keyboard repeats one pattern — black keys in twos and threes — and that pattern names every white key: C sits left of every two-black group; F sits left of every three-black group. Seven letters, cycling.
- A note's address is letter + accidental + octave number, middle C = C4, typed with
#andb(F#4,Bb3). The octave number changes only at C: B3 → C4 → … → B4 → C5. - The staff steps by letter name; the keyboard steps by half step — two maps of one terrain. Treble and bass staves joined by a brace form the grand staff, with C4 on its own ledger line in the gap.

- Enharmonic spellings share a sound, not an identity: G♯4 and A♭4 are one key and two different written notes. Spelling carries meaning, starting in unit 4 and never stopping.
Check your understanding
Work these before peeking — they're ungraded, and worked answers follow at the bottom of the page.
- Without looking at anything, describe how to find every C on a keyboard using only the black keys. Then: which white key sits immediately right of every group of three black keys?
- Give the address of the note one half step below middle C, and explain why its octave number isn't 4.
- Start on F4. Name the note a whole step up, then the note a half step up that keeps the letter F, then the note a half step up that changes the letter. Three answers.
- Your bandmate insists that E♯4 "isn't a real note." Name the key it's played on, and give a one-sentence reply.
- A chatbot tells you: "G♯4 and A♭4 are the same note, so it doesn't matter which you write." What's right and what's wrong in that sentence?
Answers (worked reasoning — read after attempting)
- Find any group of two black keys; the white key immediately to its left is a C — and that's every C on the instrument, because the two-black-key group repeats identically in every octave. Immediately right of every group of three black keys sits B (the three-group is fenced by F on the left and B on the right).
- B3. One key below middle C crosses the octave boundary: octave numbers run from each C up to the B above it, so the moment you step below C4 you're in octave 3. B3 sits directly below C4 — the number changes at C, in both directions.
- A whole step up from F4 is G4 (two half-step moves: F4 → F♯4 → G4). A half step up keeping the letter is F♯4 (same letter, raised). A half step up changing the letter is G♭4 — the same black key as F♯4, spelled from the G side. Same sound, different written note.
- E♯4 is played on the F4 key — a white key. Reply: "A sharp means up a half step from E, and the next key up from E4 happens to be white; E♯4 is as real as the key it lives on." (B♯3 works the same way: it's played on the C4 key.)
- Right: G♯4 and A♭4 sound identical — one piano key. Wrong: they are not the same written note, and it will matter which you write — the correct spelling depends on the key and the direction of the line (that judgment starts in unit 4). Enharmonic means "sounds alike," never "equals." Catching exactly this collapse is the scored audit step in this week's tutorial.
