Segment 1 — Ear first: the room already keeps time (8 min) · Session 1 opens
Hook (nothing on screen yet). Start a groove at the drum or piano lid — nothing fancy, a straight four. Within seconds heads nod and feet tap. Stop cold. "What was your foot doing just now? Nobody taught it that this morning." Then clap a two-bar pattern and have the room clap it back. They will nail it — every clap in the right place — without one written note.
- "Your body already reads rhythm. What it doesn't have yet is a way to write down what it knows — so tonight's groove survives until rehearsal, and so the band plays it the same way twice."
- The promise (say it, then put it on the board): "By the end of this week you can hear a groove, count it out loud, and hand your drummer one written bar that means exactly what you played."
- Last week every note got a where — an address in pitch. This week every note gets a when. Same spine: ear first, name second, page third.
Memory hook: "Rhythm is the part of music your body already reads."
Segment 2 — Beat vs. rhythm: the grid and what rides on it (8 min)
Plain language first. The beat (or pulse) is the steady, evenly spaced tick underneath the music — the thing feet tap and heads nod. Rhythm is what actually happens against that grid: long notes, short notes, silences, landing on the tick or between the ticks. Tempo is just how fast the grid runs.
- Demonstrate: keep a slow steady tap going and speak an uneven sentence over it. The tap never changes; the talking dances around it. That's beat versus rhythm in one breath.
- Interaction (2 min): half the room taps the beat, half claps the rhythm of the Twinkle opening over it. Swap. Both halves just performed two different jobs at once — name the jobs.
Misconception + cure:
- ❌ "The rhythm of the melody IS the beat."
✅ Cure: the beat keeps going through long notes and through silence — the melody's rhythm doesn't. If the singer holds a note for four counts, your foot doesn't stop. What the foot does is the beat; what the singer does is rhythm.
Segment 3 — The value family: five shapes, one rule (12 min)
Plain language first. Note values don't promise clock time — they promise proportion. One rule builds the whole family: each value lasts as long as two of the next one down. A whole note = two half notes = four quarter notes = eight eighth notes = sixteen sixteenth notes. Tempo decides how long a quarter actually takes; the page only ever promises the ratios.

Four bars on one repeated pitch — rhythm is today's subject, so the pitch stays parked on B4. Bar 1: one whole note filling the bar. Bar 2: two half notes. Bar 3: four quarter notes. Bar 4: eight eighth notes. Every bar lasts exactly as long as every other; the notes just slice it finer.
- Interaction — the ladder recital (2 min): point at each bar while the room claps it against your steady beat. Same total time each bar, twice as many attacks each step down. They can hear the 2:1 rule before they can recite it.
Misconception + cure:
- ❌ "A quarter note = one second" (values as fixed clock time).
✅ Cure: values are fractions of each other, not of the clock. At a fast tempo an eighth note flies; at a ballad tempo it strolls. The ratios never move; the clock always does.
Segment 4 — Meter, time signatures, and the barline (14 min)
Ear first. Play a steady beat and lean on every second tick: the room hears ONE-two, ONE-two. Now lean on every third: ONE-two-three — instantly a waltz. Nothing changed but the grouping. That grouping is meter.
- Barlines draw the grouping on the page: a vertical line before each strong beat, fencing the music into measures (bars). The first beat of each bar is the downbeat.
- The time signature announces the grouping once, at the start: top number = how many beats per bar; bottom number = which note value carries the beat (4 = quarter note, 2 = half note, 8 = eighth note). So 3/4 means three quarter-note beats per bar. The bottom number is a note value, never a count.
- Classification by beats per bar: 2 = duple (2/4), 3 = triple (3/4), 4 = quadruple (4/4). All of these are simple meters — each beat divides naturally in two. (There's a whole other family where beats divide in threes; that's next unit's room to walk into.)
- Show one meter filled two legal ways:

Three bars of 3/4 on the repeated pitch: bar 1 holds three quarter notes — the meter's "advertised" contents. Bar 2 holds six eighth notes, and bar 3 holds a single dotted half note. All three bars are correct: each adds up to three quarter-note beats.
Misconception + cure:
- ❌ "3/4 means three quarter notes in every bar."
✅ Cure: 3/4 means three quarter-note beats of room. Furnish the room however you like — six eighths, a dotted half, a quarter and a half-rest — as long as the values total three beats. The time signature is a landlord, not a decorator.
Segment 5 — Counting: the grid gets syllables (12 min)
Plain language first. Counting is how musicians speak the grid. Number the beats: "1 2 3 4." Split each beat in half — the division — and the halfway point is "&": "1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &." Split each half again — the subdivision — and the four quarters of each beat are "1 e & a" (say it one-ee-and-uh): "1 e & a 2 e & a 3 e & a 4 e & a."
- This is the counting system for every simple meter in this course. Its home turf is the American band room; your drummer probably already speaks it.
- Worked example (count it, clap it, then show it):

- Interaction — speak-then-clap (3 min): the room counts a full bar of subdivision out loud in tempo, then claps only the attacks of bar 1 above while still counting everything. Counting what you don't play is the skill — the grid runs even where the notes don't.
Misconception + cure:
- ❌ "The time signature's bottom number tells me what to count to."
✅ Cure: the top number is the count; the bottom is a note value. In 3/4 you count to three, and the 4 just tells you the quarter note owns each count. (2/2 counts to two — with half notes carrying the beat.)
Segment 6 — The dot and the tie (12 min)
Plain language first — two tools for lengths the plain values can't spell.
- The augmentation dot adds half the note's own value. A dotted half = half + quarter = three beats (in a /4 meter). A dotted quarter = quarter + eighth = one and a half beats. The dot is a percentage, not a flat fee.
- The tie joins two notes of the same pitch into one unbroken sound: quarter tied to quarter = one two-beat sound, attacked once. The tie is the only way to hold a sound across a barline, and it builds any length a single dotted value can't.

Three bars in 4/4: bar 1 is a dotted half (beats 1–3) plus a quarter on 4. Bar 2 ends in a half note tied across the barline into bar 3's first half note — one four-beat sound that starts on beat 3 of bar 2 and doesn't re-attack. Bar 3 finishes with its own half note on beat 3.
Misconception + cure #1:
- ❌ "The dot adds a beat."
✅ Cure: the dot adds half of whatever it's attached to. On a half note that happens to be a beat's worth (a quarter); on a quarter it's half a beat; on an eighth it's a quarter of a beat. Students who memorize "dot = +1" get dotted quarters wrong forever — kill it today.
Misconception + cure #2:
- ❌ "A tie is a slur."
✅ Cure: same curve, different job. A tie connects two of the same pitch: one sound, add the lengths. A slur connects different pitches: play them smoothly, every note still sounds. Check the noteheads — same line-or-space means tie.
Segment 7 — Pickups, stems, beams — and the AI-critique moment (9 min) · Session 1 closes (~75)
Plain language first, three quick tools:
- Anacrusis (pickup): some tunes start before beat 1 — a note or two that lean into the first downbeat. Traditional bookkeeping: the pickup's value is borrowed from the final bar, so a one-beat pickup in 4/4 leaves a three-beat final bar. Pickup + last bar = one full measure.
- Stems and flags: below the middle staff line, stems go up (on the note's right); above it, stems go down (on the left); on the middle line, either works — down is the common choice. Flags mark eighths (one) and sixteenths (two).
- Beams replace flags to group notes by beat so the eye finds the grid fast. Beaming changes nothing about the sound — two beamed eighths and two flagged eighths are played identically. Beams are for the reader.
AI-critique moment (2 min, live on the projector). Paste into a chatbot: "In 4/4, how many beats does a dotted quarter note last? One sentence." Read the answer with the room. Chatbots regularly say "two beats" — the exact dot-adds-a-beat error we just cured — or bless bar math that doesn't add up. "All term the tool drafts and you re-add the bar. Your tutorial's audit step this week scores exactly that skill."
Why this makes you a better musician
This unit's vocabulary is the difference between feeling time and running it. You can count a chart in — "1, 2, 1 2 3 4" — and mean something exact by it, at a tempo you chose on purpose. You can hold a groove steady while the singer floats, because your grid doesn't depend on theirs. Best of all: the rhythm you worked out at rehearsal gets written down — one bar of values on a napkin — so Thursday's band plays what Tuesday's band played, the same way twice, without you re-teaching it by hum. And when the push isn't sitting right, you can say "that hit lands on the & of 2, not on 3" — nine words that fix in one pass what forty minutes of vibes-based description won't. The studio is exactly this, at performance speed.
Callback + tease + hand-off.
- Callback: "Every idea today entered through your ears or your foot before it hit the page. That order never changes here."
- Tease: "Next unit — Dividing the beat: some beats split in twos, and some split in threes. Your ear already knows the difference — it's the difference between a march and House of the Rising Sun. We'll name it."
- Hand-off: read the chapter if you haven't; Tutorial 2 with your AI tutor is due before Week 2's second session so the studio can build on it; practice set, quiz, discussion, and the Count It, Write It assignment close the end of Week 2.
Segment 8 — Studio: "Groove transcription" (75 min) · Session 2
Run from the studio sheet (P-studio-week-02). Shape, for planning: pulse-finding rounds (ears and feet only) → echo-and-count rounds (clap back, then say the counting) → notation rounds at the rhythm line → the groove capstone, where each student writes a two-bar groove and a neighbor plays it back from the page. The studio is the payoff enacted: hear it, count it aloud, write it, and watch someone else play it the same way twice. 20 points, graded in session; the async make-up path (full credit) is on the studio sheet.

Scope flag
This outline stays inside Week 2's eleven ledger concepts (beat/pulse, note and rest values, the augmentation dot, ties, simple meter, time signatures, barlines/measures, "1 e & a" counting, anacrusis, duple/triple/quadruple classification, stems/flags/beams) and uses Week 1's pitch addresses only to park rhythm examples on a single repeated B4. Compound meters, dotted beat units, tuplets, and shuffle feel are deliberately left as Dividing the beat's material — 6/8 is named only as a tease, never taught or assessed here. The counting syllables match the course's locked tables exactly.
