Your foot already knows

You already hear this. We're going to name what you already know.

Last unit, that sentence was about pitch. This unit it's about time — and the case is even stronger. Think about the last time you played or sang with other people. Nobody handed out a schedule of when each note should happen, and yet everyone started together, stayed together, and ended together. Your foot found the pulse without being asked. When the drummer pushed a hit early, you felt it before you could have explained it. You have been keeping, subdividing, and correcting time for years. That's not a vibe; that's a skill — a precise one. What it's missing is a filing system.

This unit builds the time side of the filing system. By the end of this chapter you will be able to: tell the beat apart from the rhythm that rides on it; read and write the five everyday note values and their rests, which relate by one beautiful rule; read a time signature and say exactly what each number promises; fence music into measures with barlines and classify its meter as duple, triple, or quadruple; count any simple-meter bar out loud with "1 &" and "1 e & a"; stretch notes with the augmentation dot and the tie — two tools that beginners mix up and professionals lean on daily; and balance the books when a tune starts early with a pickup. None of it requires prior reading experience, and all of it starts in your body.

Where we are

Unit 1 gave every note a where: an exact address like F♯4. This unit gives every note a when: how long it lasts, and where it lands against the pulse. Put a where and a when together and you can write down music — which is the whole Foundations arc (units 1–7) in one sentence, with the midterm in unit 8 as its finish line. Rhythm gets two full units, this one and the next, because reading rhythm is where ear-strong musicians most often feel the page fighting them. It won't fight long.

The beat: the grid under everything

Put on any song you love and let your foot do what it does. That steady, evenly spaced tap — the thing that keeps going through long notes, short notes, and silence — is the beat, also called the pulse. It is the grid the whole performance hangs on. Tempo is simply how fast the grid ticks: a fast tempo means beats arrive quickly, a slow one means they stroll. Speed up the tempo and every note gets proportionally shorter; the relationships never change.

Rhythm is what actually happens against the grid: attacks that land on beats, between beats, or hold across several. Beat and rhythm are two different jobs. Try this right now: tap a slow steady beat with your foot and speak your own name over it in some uneven, dramatic way. Your foot didn't flinch. That independence — grid below, events above — is the entire trick of rhythm notation. The page writes the events; the grid is understood.

Misconception check. "The melody's rhythm is the beat." No — the beat keeps ticking through a held note and through silence, and the melody doesn't. If the singer holds one note for four counts, your foot taps four times. What the foot does is beat; what the singer does is rhythm.

The value family: five shapes, one rule

Notes show their duration by their shape: hollow or filled heads, stems, flags. Five shapes cover almost everything you'll read this term, and one rule relates them: each value lasts exactly as long as two of the next value down.

  • Whole note (typed w) — a hollow head, no stem.
  • Half note (h) — hollow head with a stem; two halves fill a whole.
  • Quarter note (q) — filled head with a stem; two quarters fill a half.
  • Eighth note (e) — filled head, stem, one flag; two eighths fill a quarter.
  • Sixteenth note (s) — filled head, stem, two flags; two sixteenths fill an eighth.

So a whole equals two halves, four quarters, eight eighths, sixteen sixteenths. (Thirty-second notes exist — the doubling just keeps going — but you won't need them for a while.) Here is the whole family laid out so each bar lasts the same total time:

In plain English: four bars on one repeated pitch — rhythm is the subject, so the pitch stays parked on B4, the treble staff's middle line. Bar one holds a single whole note; bar two, two half notes; bar three, four quarter notes; bar four, eight eighth notes. Every bar occupies identical time. The notes just slice it finer.

Notice what the family does not promise: clock time. A quarter note is not "one second"; it's half of a half note, full stop. Tempo decides what that means in seconds, which is why the same written rhythm works as a ballad or a barn-burner.

Every value has a matching rest — a counted silence of exactly the same length: whole rest, half rest, quarter rest, eighth rest, sixteenth rest (typed wr, hr, qr, er, sr). A rest is not "nothing happening." The grid runs right through it, and the rest occupies real, counted beats:

In plain English: bar one alternates sound and silence — a quarter note on beat 1, a quarter rest on beat 2, a quarter note on 3, a quarter rest on 4. Bar two is a half note on beats 1–2, then a half rest on beats 3–4. Clap it while counting all four beats aloud and you'll feel the silences take up honest space.

Misconception check. "Rests are optional pauses — just wait a vibe's worth." A rest is as measured as a note. The half rest in the example above is exactly two beats of silence, no more, no fewer. Bands fall apart on sloppy rests far more often than on sloppy notes.

Meter: the grid gets a grouping

Beats don't come at us as an undifferentiated stream — we hear them in groups. Listen to any waltz and you'll hear ONE-two-three, ONE-two-three; any march, ONE-two, ONE-two. That felt grouping is meter, and the page marks it three ways:

  1. Barlines — vertical lines that fence the staff into measures (or bars), one group per measure. The first beat of each measure is the downbeat, the grid's strong landing point.
  2. The time signature — two stacked numbers posted once at the start. The top number says how many beats each measure holds. The bottom number names which note value carries the beat: 4 means the quarter note, 2 means the half note, 8 means the eighth note. So 3/4 promises three quarter-note beats per bar; 2/2 promises two half-note beats per bar. The bottom number is a note value, never something you count to.
  3. Classification — meters are named by their beats per bar: two is duple (2/4), three is triple (3/4), four is quadruple (4/4). Everything in this unit is simple meter, meaning each beat splits naturally into two halves. (Meters whose beats split into threes are real, wonderful, and next unit's business.)

The most useful thing to understand about a time signature is what it doesn't say. 3/4 does not mean "three quarter notes in every bar." It means three quarter-note beats of room, and you may furnish the room with any values that total three beats:

In plain English: three bars of 3/4 on the repeated pitch. Bar one holds the "advertised" three quarter notes. Bar two holds six eighth notes. Bar three holds one dotted half note. All three bars are equally correct — each totals exactly three quarter-note beats. The signature is a landlord, not a decorator.

This gives you a superpower you'll use every week from now on: bar math. Add up the values in any measure; the total must equal the top number's worth of the bottom number's value. A 4/4 bar containing a half, a quarter, and an eighth holds 2 + 1 + ½ = 3½ beats — it doesn't add up, and something is missing (half a beat's worth). Checking bars is how copyists, arrangers, and careful bandmates catch errors before rehearsal wastes twenty minutes on them.

Misconception check. "The bottom number is what I count to." Flip it: the top number is the count. In 3/4 you count "1 2 3"; the 4 underneath just tells you a quarter note owns each count. In 2/2 you count "1 2" while half notes own the counts. Bottom = value, top = count, every time.

Counting: speaking the grid

Musicians don't just feel the grid — they say it, with a shared set of syllables, so that "where does that hit land?" has an exact answer. This course uses the counting system you'll hear in American band rooms everywhere:

  • The beats: number them. In 4/4: "1 2 3 4."
  • The division (each beat split in two): the halfway point of every beat is "&" (say and). "1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &."
  • The subdivision (each beat split in four): the four quarters of each beat are "1 e & a" (say one-ee-and-uh). A full 4/4 bar: "1 e & a 2 e & a 3 e & a 4 e & a."

The same pattern fits every simple meter — 3/4 divides as "1 & 2 & 3 &," 2/4 subdivides as "1 e & a 2 e & a." The numbers restart at every barline; there is no "5" in 4/4.

Counting turns written rhythm into speech. Take this line:

In plain English: two bars in 4/4 on the repeated pitch. Bar one: a quarter on beat 1, two eighths splitting beat 2, then quarters on beats 3 and 4 — spoken attacks: "1, 2 &, 3, 4." Bar two: a dotted quarter covering beat 1 and the first half of beat 2, an eighth landing on the "&" of 2, then a half note on beats 3–4 — attacks: "1, & (of 2), 3."

Two habits make counting powerful. First, count everything, attack some things: keep the full grid running in your mouth (or head) and clap only where the notes land — the syllables you don't clap on are what keep you honest through rests and long notes. Second, name positions with syllables: "the & of 2" is an exact address in time, the rhythmic sibling of F♯4. Say it to a drummer and the fix happens in one pass.

The dot and the tie: lengths the plain values can't spell

Five values give you 4, 2, 1, ½, and ¼ beats (in a /4 meter). Music constantly wants other lengths — three beats, a beat and a half. Two tools cover everything.

The augmentation dot sits just after a notehead and adds half the note's own value. Read that carefully: half of its own value, not half a beat, not one beat.

  • Dotted half = half + quarter = 3 beats (in a /4 meter).
  • Dotted quarter = quarter + eighth = 1½ beats.
  • Dotted eighth = eighth + sixteenth = ¾ of a beat.

The dot is a percentage, not a flat fee. The single most common rhythm-reading error in this course is memorizing "dot = add a beat" because the first dotted note most people meet is the dotted half (where the added half-value happens to be one beat). The dotted quarter then comes out as two beats, and every chart with a dotted-quarter groove — which is most of them — falls apart. Learn the rule, not the coincidence.

The tie is a small curve joining two notes of the same pitch into one unbroken sound: attack once, hold for the combined length. A quarter tied to an eighth is one 1½-beat sound. Ties do two jobs dots can't: they hold sound across a barline (the only legal way), and they build lengths no single dotted value can spell (like a note lasting exactly beats 2-through-4-and-a-half).

In plain English: three bars in 4/4. Bar one: a dotted half filling beats 1–3, then a quarter on 4. Bar two: quarters on 1 and 2, then a half note on 3 that is tied across the barline into the first half note of bar three — one continuous four-beat sound with a single attack on beat 3 of bar two. Bar three then closes with its own separate half note on beat 3.

Misconception check. "A tie is a slur." Same curve shape, different job, and the difference is audible. A tie joins two of the same pitch: one attack, lengths added. A slur connects different pitches: play them smoothly, but every note under it still sounds. Quick test: if the two noteheads sit on the same line or space, it's a tie; if they don't, it's a slur. Writing a slur where you mean a tie tells the player to re-attack — the opposite of what you wanted.

The pickup: starting before one

Sing "Amazing Grace." Feel where the big landing is: a-MA-zing. That first syllable, "a-," happens before the downbeat — the tune starts early, leaning into beat 1. A starting note (or few) before the first full measure is an anacrusis, or pickup.

Notation keeps the books balanced in a traditional way: the pickup's value is borrowed from the final measure. A tune in 3/4 that opens with a one-beat pickup ends with a two-beat final bar; pickup plus final bar together make exactly one full measure. Here's the shape:

In plain English: a 3/4 line on the repeated pitch that starts with a single quarter-note pickup — count it as beat 3, singing into the downbeat — then two full three-beat bars (three quarters, then a dotted half), and a final bar holding only a two-beat half note. First bar (1 beat) + last bar (2 beats) = one complete measure of 3/4. The books balance.

When you count a pickup in, treat the missing beats as silence before the entrance: in this example you'd feel "1, 2," and sing on "3." Bands do this instinctively every time someone counts off a tune that starts on "and-a-ONE."

On the page: stems, flags, and beams

Three small conventions make written rhythm readable at speed:

  • Stem direction. Notes below the staff's middle line take stems up (attached on the notehead's right side); notes above it take stems down (attached on the left). A note on the middle line — like our B4 — can go either way; down is the common choice. The rule exists purely to keep stems inside the staff, tidy and legible.
  • Flags. An eighth note wears one flag on its stem; a sixteenth wears two. Flags always hang on the right side of the stem, whichever way the stem points.
  • Beams. When several flagged notes fall inside the same beat, their flags merge into a beam — one thick line connecting the group. Beam by beat: in 4/4, four sixteenths inside beat 2 get one beam group; two eighths inside beat 3 get another. The beam's whole purpose is to show the reader where each beat begins.

Here is the fact to carve in stone: beams change nothing about the sound. Two beamed eighths and two separately flagged eighths are played absolutely identically. Beaming is typography — visual grouping in service of the reader's eye, exactly like putting spaces between words. Youcanreadasentencewithoutspaces, but why would you make anyone do that? A part with beat-respecting beams gets sight-read cleanly; the same rhythm beamed carelessly across beats gets slowed down and flubbed — while sounding, in principle, the same.

Misconception check. "Beamed notes are played connected, or faster, or as one note." No — beams don't touch the sound at all. They group the page, not the performance. If a beamed pair sounds different from a flagged pair, someone's reading eyes, not their ears, made the change.

Why this makes you a better musician

Here is what this unit's vocabulary buys you, concretely, this month.

You can count a chart in and mean it: "1, 2, 1 2 3 4" at a tempo you chose, not a hopeful shrug — and the band enters together because your count was information, not decoration. You can hold a groove steady through the singer's rubato and the guitarist's fills, because your grid runs underneath their events and doesn't negotiate. You can write down the rhythm you just played — one bar of values on the back of a set list — so Thursday's rehearsal plays what Tuesday's rehearsal discovered, the same way twice, without twenty minutes of "no, it goes more like dah-DAT." And you can fix time problems with words instead of vibes: "that hit is on the & of 2, not on 3" ends the argument in nine syllables, the way "it's F♯4" did last week. The studio — Groove transcription — is precisely this loop, drilled at performance speed: hear it, count it aloud, write it, and watch a neighbor play your bar back exactly.

  • Stem, flag, beam — the vertical line on a notehead; the curl marking eighths and sixteenths; the thick line that groups flagged notes by beat without changing their sound.

Summary

  • The beat is a steady grid; rhythm is what happens against it; tempo is the grid's speed. Values promise proportions (each = two of the next down), never clock time.
  • Every value has an equally real rest. Silence is counted, not vibed.
  • The time signature: top = beats per bar (the count), bottom = the note value carrying the beat. 3/4 is three beats of room, furnishable by any values totaling three — bar math is always checkable.

  1. A bar of 4/4 contains: quarter, quarter, eighth, eighth. Does it add up? If not, name the single note value that completes it.
  2. Your bandmate says a dotted half note lasts two and a half beats in 4/4, "because the dot adds half a beat." Fix both the number and the reasoning.
  3. Write out the full division counting (the "&" level) for one bar of 3/4, and then the full subdivision counting for one bar of 2/4.
  4. In one sentence each: what does a tie do, and what does a slur do? Then name the one situation where a tie is the only tool that works.
  5. A chatbot tells you: "A measure of 3/4 must contain three quarter notes." What's right and what's wrong in that sentence?

Answers (worked reasoning — read after attempting)

  1. Add it up: 1 + 1 + ½ + ½ = 3 beats — half a bar short of nothing, but a full beat short of 4/4's four. It doesn't add up; the bar needs one more beat. The single value that completes it is a quarter note (or a quarter rest, if you want that beat silent).
  2. The number: a dotted half lasts three beats. The reasoning: the dot adds half the note's own value — half of a half note is a quarter note, so 2 + 1 = 3. "The dot adds half a beat" is only true when the dot sits on a quarter note; the dot is a percentage of its note, not a fixed amount.
  3. 3/4 division: "1 & 2 & 3 &." 2/4 subdivision: "1 e & a 2 e & a." (Top number sets how high you count; the syllables inside each beat never change.)
  4. A tie joins two notes of the same pitch into one unbroken sound — attack once, add the lengths. A slur tells you to connect different pitches smoothly, each still sounding. The tie is the only tool when a sound must continue across a barline — no single note value can straddle the line.
  5. Right: a 3/4 bar's contents must total three quarter-note beats. Wrong: nothing says those beats arrive as three quarter notes. Six eighths, a dotted half, a quarter plus a half, a half plus a quarter rest — all legal furniture for the same three-beat room.
