Segment 1 — Ear first: the sway test (8 min) · Session 1 opens

Hook (no notation on screen yet). Two grooves at the piano or on the drum, thirty seconds each. First: a steady march pulse with even eighth notes inside it. Second: the same tempo of big beats, but rolling — each beat carrying three little notes inside. "Sway with each one. Don't count, just move." The room moves differently before anyone says a word. Then ask: "Same beat speed both times. What changed?" Someone will say the inside — take that word and put it on the board.

  • "Your body just told the two meters apart. Last unit every note got a length and every bar got a count. This unit we open the beat itself and look inside — because the inside of the beat is where groove lives."
  • The promise (say it, then write it): "By the end of this week you can hear a groove, say whether its beats split in twos or threes, name the meter, and write it down so a drummer plays it back the way you meant it."
  • Callback to the spine: every worship ballad that rolls, every blues shuffle, every jig your grandmother hummed — the ear has filed them in the threes drawer for years. This week the drawer gets a label.

Memory hook: "The beat has an inside. Twos march; threes roll."


Segment 2 — Two ways to split a beat (10 min)

Plain language first. Tap a steady beat. Now say "ap-ple" on each tap: the beat just divided into two equal parts. Same beat, now say "straw-ber-ry": three equal parts. That's the entire distinction:

  • Simple division — the beat splits into two equal parts. Every meter from last unit (2/4, 3/4, 4/4) works this way: "1 & 2 &."
  • Compound division — the beat splits into three equal parts. New this week; the meters that work this way are the 6/8 family.
  • Interaction (2 min): call a fruit, the room taps a shared beat and speaks it in rhythm — "ap-ple" rounds vs. "straw-ber-ry" rounds. Then reverse: clap a division pattern, the room answers "twos!" or "threes!"

Misconception + cure:

  • "Compound means more beats, or faster music."
    Cure: compound describes the inside of one beat, not the number of beats and not the tempo. A slow 12/8 ballad and a flying jig are both compound; a fast march is still simple. Ask "how does ONE beat split?" — that's the only question the word answers.

Segment 3 — The notation problem: a beat made of three eighths (11 min)

Plain language first. Last unit, the quarter note carried the beat and two eighths filled it. Now a beat holds three eighth notes. Which single note value lasts exactly three eighths? Not the quarter (two). Not the half (four). There is no plain note for three — but there is a dotted one: the dotted quarter (quarter plus half its value = three eighths). So compound meters put the beat on a dotted note. That's the dotted beat unit, and it's why the augmentation dot from last unit was worth learning cold.

  • Write it as arithmetic on the board: ♩. = ♪ + ♪ + ♪ — three eighths, one beat.
  • This is also why compound time signatures can't say what they mean directly: the bottom number of a time signature can name a plain value (4 = quarter, 8 = eighth) but there's no digit for "dotted quarter." So the signature names the division instead and trusts you to bundle by threes — next segment.

Misconception + cure:

  • "In 6/8 the eighth note gets the beat, because the bottom number is 8."
    Cure: the bottom number names the division, not the beat. In 6/8 the eighth is the piece; the dotted quarter is the beat that three pieces build. At a real tempo nobody feels six things per bar — they feel two big beats rolling. Play a lilting 6/8 and have the room tap along: every hand finds two, not six.

Segment 4 — Reading 6/8, 9/8, 12/8 (12 min)

The one rule. In a compound signature the top number counts divisions, so beats = top ÷ 3:

  • 6/8 → 6 ÷ 3 = 2 beatscompound duple
  • 9/8 → 9 ÷ 3 = 3 beatscompound triple
  • 12/8 → 12 ÷ 3 = 4 beatscompound quadruple
  • Beat unit in all three: the dotted quarter. Duple/triple/quadruple still mean what they meant last unit — count the beats, not the pieces.

Misconception + cure:

  • "The top number is the beat count — 6/8 has six beats."
    Cure: in compound meters the top number counts the pieces; divide by three for the beats. Six-counting is only true at rehearsal-slow tempos, and even then musicians say "in six" as a temporary tactic, not as the meter's identity. 6/8 is a two-feel; say "compound duple" and tap two.

Segment 5 — Counting the split: 1 la li (12 min)

Ear first. Echo round before any writing: instructor speaks "1 la li 2 la li" in tempo, room echoes; then clap the divisions while speaking only "1 … 2 …"; then swap.

  • Division counting (compound): each beat's three eighths are "1 la li," "2 la li," and so on — 9/8 runs "1 la li 2 la li 3 la li," 12/8 adds "4 la li."
  • Subdivision counting (compound): split each eighth in half — six sixteenths per beat — and the syllables are "1 ta la ta li ta." Divisions keep their names (1, la, li); the ta's slot in between, the way "e" and "a" slotted between "1" and "&" last unit.
  • Where the syllables come from (say it once, correctly): "1 e & a" is the traditional American band-room system; "1 la li" comes from the Eastman system (McHose–Tibbs) — whose own simple-meter division, for the curious, is "1 te 2 te." This course deliberately pairs the two systems because their syllables never collide: "&" and "a" each keep exactly one meaning, and so do "la" and "li."
  • Put a counted bar on the screen and read it together:

Misconception + cure:

  • "I'll just count 6/8 as 1-2-3-4-5-6 — same thing."
    Cure: at performance tempo six numbers per bar is a mouthful that buries the two-beat feel, and it gives you no way to say which notes are beats. "1 la li 2 la li" keeps the beats on numbers and the insides on syllables — the count is the analysis.

Segment 6 — 6/8 vs 3/4, the triplet, and the AI-critique moment (22 min) · Session 1 closes (~75)

The face-off. Write six eighth notes on the board twice. Left: grouped 3 + 3 (two beamed threes). Right: grouped 2 + 2 + 2 (three beamed twos). Same six pieces, same total time — different meters:

  • 6/8: two beats, each splitting in three — "1 la li 2 la li."
  • 3/4: three beats, each splitting in two — "1 & 2 & 3 &."
  • Clap both groupings over the same slow pulse until the room can flip between them on cue. This flip is the whole studio the second session.

Misconception + cure #1:

  • "6/8 is just 3/4 written differently — six eighths either way."
    Cure: the pieces match; the bundling doesn't. 6/8 rolls in two; 3/4 steps in three. Beaming shows the bundling on the page (last unit's rule: beam by beat), and your body confirms it — you sway a 6/8 lullaby in two and you step a waltz in three. Same ingredients, different meal.

The triplet — borrowing a three. Sometimes a piece lives in simple meter but wants one beat to roll. The triplet borrows compound division for a single beat: three notes with a small 3, filling the time two of the same value normally take. Three triplet-eighths = one quarter-note beat — the beat doesn't stretch, the pieces shrink.

A 2/4 bar of four ordinary eighths ("1 & 2 &"), then a bar whose first beat is an eighth-note triplet — three even notes squeezed into beat 1 — and whose second beat is a plain quarter. The bracket's 3 means "three in the time of two."

(Name the mirror image once: a duplet borrows twos inside a compound beat. It exists, it's rarer, and the chapter covers it in one paragraph.)

Misconception + cure #2:

  • "A triplet speeds the music up."
    Cure: the tempo never moves. The beat is a container of fixed size; a triplet packs three smaller things into it instead of two. If your foot changes speed during a triplet, the triplet is wrong — the foot is the referee.

AI-critique moment (2 min, live on the projector). Paste into a chatbot: "How many beats are in one bar of 6/8, and which note value gets the beat? One sentence." Read the answer aloud. Chatbots routinely say "six beats, the eighth note gets the beat" — the exact misconception Segment 3 cured. Let the room catch it. "Your tutorial before the second session has a scored audit step against a vetted answer sheet — mis-counting compound meter is one of AI's five classic music failures, and this week it's the one to hunt."

Why this makes you a better musician

This is the unit that gets you through the first four seconds of a song — the count-off. Call "in two: ONE… TWO…" for the 6/8 hymn and the band breathes with you; count a 12/8 ballad in four rolling beats instead of a frantic twelve and the room relaxes; kick off a waltz in an honest three. When the drummer asks whether the eighths are straight or shuffled, you'll have an exact answer — "shuffled: long–short, the short note rides the last third of the beat" — instead of playing it both ways and hoping. And when you glance at a chart and see 6/8, you'll feel the roll before you play a note, because the signature now tells your body something, not just your eye. The studio is exactly this: the room splits, the grooves fly, and you write down what you hear.

Callback + tease + hand-off.

  • Callback: "This morning your body sorted twos from threes before your brain had words. That's the spine again: you already hear this; now it has names."
  • Tease: "Next unit — Major: we leave rhythm for a while and find out why the black keys are grouped the way they are. Every scale you've ever hummed follows one pattern, and you'll build all fifteen of them."
  • Hand-off: read the chapter if you haven't; Tutorial 3 with your AI tutor is due before Week 3's second session — the studio builds on it; practice set, quiz, discussion, and the Recast the Groove assignment close the end of Week 3.

Segment 7 — Mini-teach: syncopation and the shuffle (12 min) · Session 2 opens

Ear first. Clap "1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &" with beats loud. Then clap the same grid accenting only the "&"s. The second one pushes — everyone feels it lean forward. Name it: syncopation — accent where the ear expected background, usually between beats or on a normally-weak beat.

One 4/4 bar: an eighth, three quarters, an eighth. The attacks land on beat 1, then the "&" of 1, the "&" of 2, the "&" of 3, and the "&" of 4 — after the downbeat, every note leans on an off-beat. That chain of pushes is the engine of ragtime, gospel, and most of what's on anyone's playlist. (Oh! Susanna and Swing Low, Sweet Chariot both ride it — sing a phrase of either.)

The shuffle. Now marry the two halves of this unit: keep a duple song, but let every beat's inside roll in threes and strike only the first and last third — long–short, over and over. That's a shuffle (jazz players say swing). The short note lands on "li."

Misconception + cure:

  • "If a chart shows plain even eighths, they must be played even — a shuffle would be written out in triplets every time."
    Cure: writing quarter–eighth pairs across a whole chart is clutter, so real charts usually print straight eighths plus one instruction — the word Shuffle or Swing at the top, or a 12/8 signature. The feel comes from context and the marking, not from respelling every pair. Reading a chart means reading its header, not just its noteheads.

Segment 8 — Studio: "The 6/8 Room" (≈60 min) · Session 2 closes

Run from the studio sheet (P-studio-week-03). Shape, for planning: ears-only twos-vs-threes rounds → the room physically splits (half on beats, half on divisions) and swaps → shuffle transcription → 6/8 hymn-rhythm transcription (Silent Night and a House of the Rising Sun-style arpeggio pattern, rhythm only). The studio is the payoff section enacted: hear the split, name it, count it, write it. 20 points, graded in session; the async make-up path (full credit) is on the studio sheet.


Instructor FAQ — common stumbles

The table below lists predictable Week 3 questions and quick cures.

Student says / does Quick cure
"So is 6/8 fast or slow?" Neither — meter isn't tempo. 6/8 works at lullaby speed and at jig speed; what's constant is two beats that split in threes.
Counts a 6/8 bar "1 2 3 4 5 6" in performance. Legal at crawl tempo as a practice tactic; retire it as speed arrives. Beats live on numbers, insides on "la li" — otherwise nothing in the count says where the beat is.
"Why not just write 6/8 as 3/4? Same six eighths." Bundling. 3+3 rolls in two; 2+2+2 steps in three. Have them sway one and step the other — the body refuses to treat them as the same.
Writes a triplet where the beat got longer. The container never grows. Three triplet-eighths share one quarter's worth of time. Tap the beat while they speak "tri-pl-et" inside it.
"Is 3/4 compound? It has threes in it." 3/4 has three beats that each split in two — simple triple. Compound asks how one beat splits, not how many beats there are. The word to trust is inside.
Hears a shuffle and writes dotted-eighth–sixteenth. Close — but the shuffle short note rides the last third, not the last quarter, of the beat. Speak "1 la li" and strike 1 and li; that's the true spacing.
"My worship chart says 6/8 but the band talks about 'the one and the four.'" Bands sometimes number the six eighths at slow tempos ("the four" = beat 2's first eighth). Translate politely: their "four" is your "2." Knowing both dialects is a skill, not a conflict.
"Does a dotted quarter always mean compound meter?" No — a dotted quarter can appear anywhere (it did in 4/4 last unit). Compound is about the signature setting a three-way split as the norm; the dotted beat unit is the consequence, not the definition.
