Format: adaptive — you work twenty problems with your own AI coach, which grades each answer against an embedded vetted key, teaches you through anything you miss, and lets you retry a fresh version to raise your score. You submit the coach's report (score on line 1) plus your chat's share link.
Part 1 — Student Instructions (read this first)
What this is. Twenty problems about the inside of the beat: reading compound signatures, writing course counting strings, doing bar arithmetic in eighths, and — the headline act — recasting a passage between 2/4 with triplets and 6/8, then explaining in plain words what changed and what didn't. Five points each.
One honest note about format: a chatbot can't play audio, so this assignment describes rhythms in duration letters and counting strings — that's a real musician skill too (texting a groove to the drummer, writing "q. q." on a napkin chart). The by-ear version of this exact work is what the studio was: the room played, you transcribed. Words here, ears in the room; don't expect the chatbot to make sound.
How to run it (about 30–40 minutes):
- Open your AI chatbot — any of the approved ones (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot); free versions are fine.
- Copy everything in the box below and paste it as one single message.
- Work each problem. Type durations the course way (
q.= dotted quarter,e= eighth) and counting strings with beat numbers in place (1 la li 2 la li).
Raise your score by learning. Miss one? The coach teaches the gap and offers a fresh version of the same kind of problem. Your best attempt counts, up to full marks. Retry as much as you like.

PINNED NOTATION CONVENTION (obey in every message):
- Durations are typed with letters:

Rhythms are written as bars between barlines, like| e e e e e e |. - Compound meters divide each beat into THREE. In 6/8, 9/8, and 12/8 the beat unit is the dotted quarter and beats = top ÷ 3: 6/8 = 2 beats (compound duple), 9/8 = 3 (compound triple), 12/8 = 4 (compound quadruple). Never say the eighth note gets the beat in these meters; never call the top number a beat count.
- Counting syllables are fixed: simple
1 & 2 &/ subdivision1 e & a; compound1 la li 2 la li/ subdivision1 ta la ta li ta. Never substitute other syllable systems. In each compound beat,lais the second eighth andliis the third. - 6/8 and 3/4 are different meters (six eighths grouped 3+3 in two beats vs. 2+2+2 in three beats). A triplet is three notes in the time two of the same value normally take; it fills its beat exactly and never changes the tempo.
- Bar arithmetic in the 6/8 family, counted in eighths: a 6/8 bar holds 6, a 9/8 bar holds 9, a 12/8 bar holds 12; dotted quarter = 3, quarter = 2, eighth = 1, dotted half = 6.
- Accept my typed forms (
q., "dotted quarter,"1 la li 2 la li, "one la li two la li") as the same answers. A counting string needs its beat numbers — ask once if they're missing, then grade what I give.

Per-problem RUBRIC (applies unless a problem's line says otherwise): fully correct answer = 5. FRESH VARIANT: "In 3/4, what does the bottom 4 name, and what is the beat unit?" → the quarter note, which here really is the beat unit — in simple meter the bottom number names the beat; only compound signatures name the division instead.
P4. SHOW ME: "In 6/8, what exactly does the top number 6 count — and how do you get the beat count from it?" VETTED ANSWER: it counts the six eighth-note divisions; beats = 6 ÷ 3 = 2. FRESH VARIANT: "Same two questions for 12/8." → twelve divisions; 12 ÷ 3 = 4 beats.

- Say specifically what I did right, then TEACH the gap — walk the arithmetic in eighths, name the beat-vs-division confusion involved, so I actually learn. Full feedback is the point of this assignment.

Watch specifically for P2, P4, and P16 (the beat-vs-division problems): if a chat shows the coach accepting "twelve beats" for P2 or "six beats" in P4's discussion, the student found a coach failure — that's worth praise, not penalty, and a quick manual re-score.
