You already feel this

Put on a slow blues in your head — the kind where the drummer's ride cymbal limps along, long-short, long-short. Now switch to a marching band. Both have a steady beat you could tap without thinking. But something inside the beat is different, and your body already knows what: the blues rolls, the march walks. You've been sorting music into those two bins your whole listening life — every 12/8 worship ballad in one, every straight-eighths rock song in the other — without ever being told the bins exist.

That sorting is this unit's whole subject. Last unit gave every note a length and every bar a count. This unit opens up the beat itself and asks the one question your ear has been answering for years: when this beat splits, does it split in two or in three?

By the end of this chapter you will be able to: tell simple division (beats splitting in two) from compound division (beats splitting in three) by ear and on paper; read the three compound time signatures — 6/8, 9/8, 12/8 — and say instantly how many beats each has and what note value carries the beat; count compound meter with the course syllables "1 la li" and subdivide with "1 ta la ta li ta"; explain exactly why 6/8 and 3/4 are two different meters even though both hold six eighth notes; write and read a triplet; and recognize syncopation and shuffle feel when they walk past you on a gig, because they will.

Where we are

Unit 1 gave every pitch an address. Unit 2 gave every note a duration, put the beat under everything, and taught you simple meters — 2/4, 3/4, 4/4 — where each beat splits into two eighth notes and the count runs "1 & 2 &," subdividing to "1 e & a." Everything there stays true. This unit adds the other family: meters whose beats split into three. After this week, rhythm rests for a while — units 4 and 5 move to scales and keys — but everything you transcribe for the rest of the course rides on the two rhythm units you're finishing now.

Two ways to split a beat

Tap a slow, steady beat on your knee. Keep it going and say "ap-ple" evenly across each tap: you just divided every beat into two equal parts. Now keep the same taps and say "straw-ber-ry": three equal parts, same beat. Congratulations — you have performed both divisions in western rhythm.

  • Simple division: the beat divides into two equal parts. All of last unit's meters are simple meters.
  • Compound division: the beat divides into three equal parts. A meter built on this division is a compound meter.

That's the entire definition, and it's worth guarding against what it doesn't say. Compound doesn't mean "more beats" — a compound meter can have two beats per bar. It doesn't mean "faster" or "harder" — a lullaby can be compound and a drill-team march is simple. The only question the word answers is: how does one beat split? Ap-ple or straw-ber-ry. Twos march; threes roll.

Misconception check. "3/4 must be compound — it's full of threes." 3/4 has three beats that each split in two ("1 & 2 & 3 &"). The three in 3/4 counts beats per bar; compound-ness is about the inside of one beat. A waltz is simple triple. The word to trust is inside.

The dotted beat unit: why compound meters look the way they do

Here's the notational puzzle compound meter has to solve. In 4/4, the beat is a quarter note, and two eighths fill it — tidy. Now suppose a beat holds three eighth notes. Which single note value equals three eighths? Run the inventory from last unit: an eighth is one, a quarter is two, a half is four. Nothing lands on three — no plain note value ever will, because plain values double as they grow.

But you already own the tool that fixes this: the augmentation dot, which adds half a note's own value. A dotted quarter = a quarter (two eighths) plus half of that (one more eighth) = exactly three eighths. So in compound meter, the beat lives on a dotted note — in the 6/8 family, on the dotted quarter. That's the dotted beat unit, and it's the single most useful fact in this unit:

In 6/8, 9/8, and 12/8, the beat is the dotted quarter, and each beat divides into three eighth notes.

This also explains a strange-looking feature of compound time signatures. A signature's bottom number can name a plain value — 4 for quarter, 8 for eighth — but there is no digit that means "dotted quarter." So compound signatures can't tell you the beat directly. Instead they name the division (the eighth note, bottom number 8) and count the divisions in the top number, trusting you to bundle them in threes. Which brings us to the reading rule.

Reading 6/8, 9/8, and 12/8

For a compound signature, the top number counts divisions, and divisions come three to a beat. So:

beats per bar = top number ÷ 3

  • 6/8 — 6 ÷ 3 = 2 beats per bar → compound duple
  • 9/8 — 9 ÷ 3 = 3 beats per bar → compound triple
  • 12/8 — 12 ÷ 3 = 4 beats per bar → compound quadruple

The classification words are the same ones you learned last unit — duple, triple, quadruple count the beats, never the pieces. And in all three signatures the beat unit is the dotted quarter.

In plain English: one bar of 9/8 on a single repeated pitch — three dotted quarter notes, one per beat. Three beats, each one a container for three eighths: compound triple.

In plain English: one bar of 12/8 — four dotted quarters, four rolling beats. Compound quadruple. If you've ever swayed through a slow gospel ballad or a doo-wop song, you've spent quality time in 12/8.

Misconception check. "6/8 means six beats per bar." The top number counts the eighth-note pieces, not the beats. At real tempos, nobody feels six — a 6/8 tune rolls in two. (Musicians do sometimes rehearse a slow 6/8 "in six" to place details precisely, the way you'd walk through choreography in slow motion. That's a practice tactic, not the meter's identity.) When someone asks what 6/8 is, the answer is: compound duple — two beats, threes inside.

Counting the split: 1 la li

Course convention, locked for the whole term (and shared with MUS-155 Aural Skills I, the paired course):

  • Compound division counting: each beat's three eighth notes are counted "1 la li," "2 la li," and so on. A full 6/8 bar of eighths runs "1 la li 2 la li"; 9/8 runs "1 la li 2 la li 3 la li"; 12/8 adds "4 la li."
  • Compound subdivision counting: split each eighth in half — six sixteenths per beat — and count "1 ta la ta li ta." Notice the divisions keep their names: 1, la, and li stay right where they were, and the "ta"s tuck in between, exactly the way "e" and "a" tucked between "1" and "&" in last unit's "1 e & a."

Where do these syllables come from? "1 e & a" is the traditional American band-room system. "1 la li" comes from the Eastman system (McHose–Tibbs) — whose own simple-meter division, for the curious, is "1 te 2 te." This course deliberately pairs the American simple-meter syllables with the Eastman compound-meter syllables because they never collide: "&" and "a" mean exactly one thing each, and so do "la" and "li." When you say a syllable in this course, it points to one place in the beat, period.

Read this bar out loud — actually out loud — before moving on:

In plain English: a bar of six even eighth notes on one pitch, spoken "1 la li 2 la li," followed by a bar of two dotted quarters — just the beats, spoken "1 … 2 …." Same two-beat skeleton under both bars; the first bar plays the insides, the second plays only the containers.

One placement drill, because two quiz questions and a studio round live here: in each beat, "la" is the second eighth and "li" is the third. If a note lands on the last third of a beat, it lands on li. File that syllable — the shuffle is going to live on it.

6/8 vs 3/4: same pieces, different meal

Write six eighth notes in a row. Bundle them 3 + 3 and you have a bar of 6/8: two beats, each rolling in three. Bundle them 2 + 2 + 2 and you have a bar of 3/4: three beats, each splitting in two. Identical ingredients — six eighths, the same total time — and completely different music:

  • 6/8: "1 la li 2 la li" — two-feel, rolling. Sway music. Silent Night. House of the Rising Sun. Row, Row, Row Your Boat.
  • 3/4: "1 & 2 & 3 &" — three-feel, stepping. Waltz music. Down in the Valley. Amazing Grace.

The page tells you which is which through the beaming rule you learned last unit: notes beam by beat, so 6/8 shows two beamed groups of three, and 3/4 shows three beamed groups of two. Your body tells you which is which even faster: you rock a 6/8 tune side to side in two, and you step a waltz around the room in three. If you catch yourself unable to decide, tap the big beats and ask how many there are per bar — two rolling beats or three stepping ones. The answer is the meter.

Misconception check. "Six eighths is six eighths — 6/8 and 3/4 are the same thing written two ways." The total duration matches; the grouping doesn't, and meter is grouping. This is the same lesson as unit 1's enharmonic twins, wearing rhythm clothes: two things can share raw material and still be genuinely different because they're organized differently — and the organization is what your listener hears.

The triplet: borrowing a three

Sometimes a song lives happily in simple meter but wants one beat — just one — to roll. Notation's answer is the tuplet: a bracket that temporarily changes how a beat divides. The overwhelmingly common one is the triplet: three notes in the time two of the same value normally take, marked with a small 3.

The bookkeeping matters: a triplet does not stretch the beat. An eighth-note triplet fits exactly into one quarter-note beat — the same beat two ordinary eighths would fill. The beat is a container of fixed size; the triplet packs three slightly-smaller items into it instead of two ordinary ones. Your foot, tapping the beat, should never flinch.

In plain English: first, a 2/4 bar of four ordinary eighths — "1 & 2 &." Then a bar whose first beat is an eighth-note triplet (three even notes squeezed into beat 1, bracketed with a 3) and whose second beat is a plain quarter note. For that one bracketed beat, the music borrows compound division — it rolls — and then goes back to walking.

For completeness: the borrow runs the other way too. A duplet puts two even notes where a compound beat expects three — it appears now and then in 6/8 writing. Recognize the idea; this course won't drill it.

Misconception check. "Triplets speed up the music." The tempo never moves. If three notes now share the beat, each note is shorter, but the beat — and your foot — hold absolutely steady. A triplet that rushes the beat isn't a triplet; it's a mistake with a bracket on it.

Syncopation: the accent moves

Everything so far assumed the important notes land on beats. Rhythm gets its electricity from breaking that assumption. Syncopation is an accent where the ear expected background — a note attacked between beats, or held across a beat so the beat itself arrives silent, or a weak beat suddenly loud.

The plainest recipe: attack on an "&" and don't re-attack on the following beat. The ear, expecting the beat to be confirmed, leans forward into the gap — that lean is the push you feel in ragtime, gospel, and nearly everything with a backbeat.

In plain English: a 4/4 bar containing an eighth, three quarters, and an eighth. Count "1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &" and watch where the attacks fall: on beat 1, then on the "&" of 1, the "&" of 2, the "&" of 3, and the "&" of 4. After the downbeat, every single note lands off the beat — a chain of pushes. The bar adds up exactly (half a beat, then one, one, one, then half), but the weight has moved off the grid. Sing the opening of Oh! Susanna — the tune leans exactly this way — or any phrase of Swing Low, Sweet Chariot.

Ties are syncopation's best friend: tie an "&" note across the next beat and the beat arrives with no attack at all. You wrote ties last unit; now you know what they're usually for.

The shuffle: this unit's two halves shake hands

Take a duple song — four beats, backbeat, nothing exotic. Now let every beat's interior roll in threes, and strike only the first and last thirds of each beat: long–short, long–short. That lilting limp is the shuffle (jazz musicians say swing), and it is precisely compound division applied to a duple groove. In course syllables: the long note owns the beat number, the short note lands on li, and "la" stays silent inside the long note — "1 (la) li 2 (la) li."

In plain English: one bar of 12/8 built entirely of quarter–eighth pairs — four beats of long–short. The quarter takes two-thirds of each beat, the eighth takes the last third. That's the ride-cymbal pattern of every blues and most early rock and roll — the limping long–short you've heard on a thousand slow-blues records. (Ragtime like The Entertainer, by contrast, is played with straight, even subdivision — its bounce comes from syncopation, not from a compound lilt. Knowing the difference is exactly this unit's skill.)

Now the practical wrinkle, because you will meet it on a bandstand within the year: charts usually don't write the shuffle out. Spelling quarter–eighth pairs across two hundred bars is clutter, so real charts print straight eighth notes plus one instruction — the word Shuffle or Swing over the first bar, or a 12/8 signature up front. The players apply the long–short feel everywhere. Two consequences: (1) written-even doesn't always mean played-even — read the header, not just the noteheads; and (2) if you transcribe a shuffle, you have a choice — notate the feel literally in 12/8, or write straight eighths and one word. Both are correct; the second is kinder to the reader.

Misconception check. "Uneven eighths in a shuffle are just sloppy straight eighths." The shuffle's spacing is exact: the short note rides the last third of the beat — the li — not "whenever." It's compound division, precisely observed, and drummers guard that spacing with their lives. (It's also not a dotted-eighth–sixteenth, which would put the short note on the last quarter of the beat — a stiffer, more military spacing. Speak "1 la li" and place the short note on li; that's the true shuffle.)

Why this makes you a better musician

Count-offs, first. The person who counts a song in owns its groove for everyone else, and this unit is the count-off unit: a 12/8 ballad gets "in four, rolling — ONE … TWO …," a 6/8 hymn gets an honest two, a waltz gets three, and the band starts together in the right feel because the count told them the inside of the beat, not just its speed. Second: the shuffle conversation. "Straight or shuffled?" is one of the most common questions on any bandstand, and you can now both ask it and answer it in one exact sentence — the short note rides the last third, on li. Third: reading. A glance at a chart's signature now tells your body something before you play — see 6/8, feel the roll. And fourth: your transcriptions from this week forward can capture the feel of what you hear, not just the pitches — which means the groove you invent at midnight can be handed to a drummer and played back the way you meant it.   • Every beat has an inside: simple division splits it in two ("1 &"), compound division splits it in three ("1 la li"). Compound describes the inside of one beat — never the beat count, never the tempo.

  • A triplet borrows a three inside a simple beat — three in the time of two, beat unchanged. (A duplet borrows the other direction.)
  • Syncopation moves accents off the expected grid; the shuffle applies compound division to a duple groove, long–short with the short note on li — and charts usually notate it as straight eighths plus one word.

Work these before peeking — they're ungraded, and worked answers follow at the bottom of the page.

  1. A friend says: "9/8 — that's nine beats per bar, right?" Give the correct beat count, the beat unit, and the classification, and explain in one sentence how you got the beat count.
  2. Write out the full division counting for one bar of 12/8, and circle (mentally) the syllable where a shuffle's short note would land in each beat.
  3. Six eighth notes fill a bar. What single piece of visual evidence on the page tells you whether you're in 6/8 or 3/4, and what does each version of that evidence look like?
  4. A 6/8 bar currently contains a dotted quarter followed by a quarter note. Is the bar full? If not, name the one note value that completes it, and show the arithmetic in eighth notes.
  5. Your guitarist looks at a chart marked Shuffle whose notes are all plain even eighths and says, "Then why does the recording sound uneven? Someone's playing it wrong." Set them straight in two or three sentences.

Answers (worked reasoning — read after attempting)

  1. Three beats, the dotted quarter, compound triple. The top number of a compound signature counts eighth-note divisions, which bundle three to a beat: 9 ÷ 3 = 3 beats. (Nine-counting at a crawl is a rehearsal tactic; the meter itself is a three-feel.)
  2. "1 la li 2 la li 3 la li 4 la li." The shuffle's short note lands on li — the last third of each beat — every time.
  3. The beaming (grouping). 6/8 beams the six eighths 3 + 3 — two groups, two beats, rolling. 3/4 beams them 2 + 2 + 2 — three groups, three beats, stepping. Beams mark beats, and meter is grouping; the total duration is identical and irrelevant.
  4. Not full. In eighths: a dotted quarter = 3, a quarter = 2, so the bar holds 5 of the 6 eighths a 6/8 bar needs. The missing value is one eighth note: 3 + 2 + 1 = 6.
  5. Nobody's wrong — the chart is using the standard shorthand. Writing every long–short pair would clutter two hundred bars, so charts print straight eighths and put the feel in one instruction: the word Shuffle. The players apply compound division everywhere — long–short, short note on the last third of the beat. Written-even plus that marking means played-uneven; reading the header is part of reading the chart.
