Segment 1 — Ear first: the ladder everybody owns (8 min) · Session 1 opens
Hook (no notation on screen yet). Play a major scale from C4, up one octave. Ask the room to sing it back on "la." They will — every one of them, in tune, no paper. Then play it again starting from G. "Same tune?" Yes — everyone hears it's the same ladder from a different front door. Then start it from E but sneak in one wrong note on the way up. The room flinches. Nobody needed a single term to catch it.
- "Your ear has known this ladder since before you could talk. What it doesn't have yet is the recipe — so you can build it starting anywhere, on paper, and know which black keys it needs before you play a note."
- The promise (say it, then put it on the board): "By the end of this week you can spell all fifteen major scales, write their signatures, and look at any chart and know its key before the count-off."
- Say the spine again: you already hear this; we're going to name what you already know. Units 1–3 gave every note an address and every rhythm a count. This unit organizes the addresses into neighborhoods — keys — and the midterm finish line is now four weeks out.

Segment 2 — One pattern: W W H W W W H (12 min)
Plain language first. The major scale is a fixed recipe of whole steps and half steps — the two distances Week 1 put in their hands. Eight notes, seven moves: whole, whole, half, whole, whole, whole, half.
- Walk it on the room keyboard from C, all white keys: C–D whole, D–E whole, E–F half (the built-in white-key half step), F–G, G–A, A–B whole, B–C half (the other one). The two half steps land between steps 3–4 and 7–8 — exactly where E–F and B–C sit. That's not a coincidence; it's why the white keys are laid out the way they are.
- Show it, then say it in words (every example gets both):

The C major scale climbing one octave on the treble staff: eight quarter notes walking stepwise from middle C up to C5, no sharps or flats anywhere — with the two half-step moves hiding between E4–F4 and B4–C5.
- Interaction (2 min): the room sings the scale slowly while everyone taps the paper keyboard; at each half step, they snap instead of tap. Two snaps per octave, always in the same two places.
Misconception + cure:
- ❌ "The pattern breaks when the octave starts over — C5 ruins the recipe."
✅ Cure: the pattern loops. C5 is simultaneously step 8 of the lap you finished and step 1 of the next lap. Nothing resets; the ladder just keeps climbing the same seven moves per octave, forever, in both directions.
Segment 3 — Moving home: the spelling law (14 min)
Ear first. Play the ladder from G4. The room already confirmed it's the same tune. Now build it on paper from G and watch what happens: G–A whole ✓, A–B whole ✓, B–C half ✓, C–D, D–E whole ✓ … E to F is only a half step, and the recipe demands a whole — so the seventh note must be F♯. One black key, demanded by the pattern, not decoration.
- Spell it in full on the board: G A B C D E F♯ G — and point at the law that just quietly operated: every letter name appears exactly once per octave. Seven letters, seven rungs, then the front-door letter again. That's why the seventh note is F♯ and can never be G♭ — G is already taken by the front door.
- Run the same build from F: F–G, G–A whole ✓ … A to B is a whole step but the recipe wants a half — so the fourth note must be B♭. Spell it: F G A B♭ C D E F. Flats are the same law working in the other direction.
- One more, faster, with the room calling the moves:

Misconception + cure:
- ❌ "The sharps and flats in a key are random — you just memorize which ones."
✅ Cure: nothing is random; every accidental is the pattern's demand at a specific rung. Build any scale live from W W H W W W H and the accidentals fall out. Memorizing comes later and gets easier because there's a system underneath (next segment).
Segment 4 — The signature: the scale, filed (13 min)
Plain language first. Writing ♯ next to every F in a G major song would be clutter. So notation files the key's accidentals once, at the start of every line: the key signature. A signature isn't new information — it's the scale's accidentals, collected.
- The magic that makes signatures readable at a glance: accidentals always join in one fixed order. Sharps: F C G D A E B. Flats: B E A D G C F — the same list read backward. One sharp is always F♯; two are always F♯ C♯; four flats are always B♭ E♭ A♭ D♭. No signature ever mixes sharps and flats.
- Reading a signature backward into a key name, two tricks: for sharps, the last sharp sits a half step below ^1 — see A♯ last, the key is B major. For flats, the next-to-last flat names the key — see B♭ E♭ A♭, the key is E♭ major. (The flat trick has one edge case: a single flat, B♭ alone, is F major — there's no "next-to-last" to read, so that one is simply learned.)
- Interaction — 90-second drill: flash four signatures by count and order ("three sharps — F♯ C♯ G♯"); tables shout the key (A major). Then reverse: "E major!" → tables shout "four sharps — F♯ C♯ G♯ D♯."
Misconception + cure:
- ❌ "The signature tells you the first note of the song."
✅ Cure: the signature names the neighborhood, not the starting pitch. Songs in G major begin on all kinds of notes; what the signature promises is which ladder the song lives on — every F is sharp until further notice, and home is G.
Segment 5 — The circle: the map of every key (14 min)
Plain language first. Line up what Segment 3 discovered: C major, zero sharps. Start the ladder instead on C's fifth note — G — and you need one sharp. Start on G's fifth note — D — and you need two. Every time the front door moves up a fifth (five letter names, the do-to-sol distance; the full interval vocabulary arrives in unit 6), exactly one sharp joins the signature. Chain it and you get the sharp side of the circle of fifths: C → G → D → A → E → B → F♯ → C♯, ending at seven sharps.
- Run it the other way — down a fifth each time — and flats join one at a time instead: C → F → B♭ → E♭ → A♭ → D♭ → G♭ → C♭, ending at seven flats.
- Point at the bonus pattern: the sharps themselves join in fifths (F C G D A E B), and the flats in fifths the other way (B E A D G C F). The whole system is one interval, applied repeatedly. Nothing on the circle is arbitrary.
- Interaction (3 min): the room builds the circle out loud, one student per stop, each adding the new accidental: "G — one sharp, F♯." "D — two sharps, F♯ C♯." Around to C♯; then the flat side to C♭. This is the studio relay, previewed.
Misconception + cure:
- ❌ "The circle of fifths is a poster you memorize."
✅ Cure: it's a machine you can rebuild from scratch. Anyone who can count up five letter names can generate the entire circle on a napkin — which is exactly what you'll do when a chart in five flats lands on your stand. Memorization is just the speed upgrade.
Segment 6 — Fifteen homes, twelve levers · degrees · solfège · AI-critique (14 min) · Session 1 closes (~75)
Fifteen keys, twelve sounds. Count the circle's stops: 8 sharp-side + 7 flat-side = 15 major keys. But a piano octave has only 12 levers. The books balance because three pairs are enharmonic keys — same piano keys, different spellings: B/C♭ · F♯/G♭ · C♯/D♭. Week 1's rule scales up: G♯4 and A♭4 were one lever with two written names; F♯ major and G♭ major are one sound with two complete, legitimate spellings — six sharps one way, six flats the other. Both must be spellable, because charts arrive written in both.
Scale degrees, by number. Inside any key, rungs get numbers: ^1 through ^7, then ^1 again at the octave. "The ^5 of E♭ major" = B♭, whatever the key, whatever the octave. (The degrees also have names — that vocabulary arrives in unit 5, attached to minor. This week, numbers only.)
Solfège. The singable version of the numbers: do re mi fa sol la ti do, movable — do is ^1 of whatever key you're in. This is the exact ladder MUS-155 Aural Skills I sings this week, so the syllables will be in their ears before lunch. Sing one scale together on solfège right now; have the room hold ti and feel it lean into do.
AI-critique moment (2 min, live on the projector). Paste into a chatbot: "Spell the G♭ major scale, one octave ascending." Read the answer against the spelling law: seven letters, each exactly once, six flats. Chatbots routinely double a letter (G♭ A♭ B♭ B…), skip one, or "helpfully" respell the whole thing in F♯ "because it's the same key." Every failure is one this room can now catch. "the second session's tutorial has a scored audit step — this is the skill, and this week it's about scales."
Why this makes you a better musician
The circle of fifths is the reason a chart in D♭ ten minutes before downbeat is a shrug instead of a panic. Once you know D♭ means five flats — B♭ E♭ A♭ D♭ G♭, always in that order — you stop reading five separate warnings and start reading one key. When the worship leader says "take it up to E," you already know that's four sharps and which four. When the guitarist says "it's in A," you know the C, F, and G in your part are all sharp before you play a note. Every musician who reads keys instead of accidentals is running this one pattern silently and fast. The studio is that speed, built on purpose.

- Callback: "One ladder. You've been able to sing it for years — now you can build it from any front door and file it as a signature."
- Tease: "Next unit — Minor, three ways: the other ladder your ear owns. Same tools, darker color, and three versions of it."
- Hand-off: read the chapter; Tutorial 4 with your AI tutor is due before Week 4's second session — the studio builds on it; practice set, quiz, discussion, and the Eight Keys assignment close the end of Week 4.
Segment 7 — Studio: "The circle relay" (75 min) · Session 2
Run from the studio sheet (P-studio-week-04). Shape, for planning: ear-first ladder rounds (same tune, new front door; catch the broken rung) → the circle-of-fifths relay, both directions, out loud → signature speed round → "name the key of the tune we just played" (ear + signature together) → each student builds the key card they keep all term. The studio is the payoff enacted: see the signature, hear the home, name the key, fast. 20 points, graded in session; async make-up path (full credit) on the studio sheet.

Scope flag
This outline stays inside Week 4's ledger concepts (the major pattern, the fifteen major scales, key signatures, both accidental orders, the circle of fifths, enharmonic keys, degrees ^1–^7 by number, movable-do solfège in major) plus the Week 1–Week 3 tools it builds on. Scale-degree names are deliberately deferred to unit 5, interval quality names to unit 6, and the do–mi–sol pattern is sung only, never named as a chord — that naming belongs to unit 9. "Fifth" appears only as the circle's informal distance, glossed and forward-referenced.
