Week shape: first unit back after the mid-term break, and the term's capstone week — this unit closes a day early, so the weekend before the final stays clear. "The Chart" is due with it.
You already hear this. We're going to name what you already know.

Segment 1 — Ear first: welcome back, and the song survives the move (8 min) · Session 1 opens
Hook (no notation on screen yet). Welcome them back from break warmly — then immediately make music. Have the room sing the first phrase of Amazing Grace, starting on a pitch you give from the piano. Then: "Again — new starting note," and give one noticeably lower. The room does it without effort.
- Ask the question that runs the whole week: "You just sang the same song in two different keys, no paper, no warning. What stayed the same?" Draw it out: the shape, the steps and leaps, where it leans, where it lands. Everything musical survived. Only the addresses changed.
- Name it: transposition — moving music to a new pitch level while keeping every relationship intact. Their ears have been doing it for years (every campfire key change, every "start lower so I can reach it"). This week the arithmetic catches up with the reflex.
- The promise (say it, then put it on the board): "By the end of this week you can move a whole chart for a real singer, hand a correct part to a trumpet player, and scribble a chart in numbers that works in every key at once."
- Say the capstone part plainly: this is the last content unit, and it's the one the other fourteen were for. Nothing new to fear this week — everything is a payoff.
Memory hook: "Transposing moves the addresses. The song lives in the relationships."
Segment 2 — Transposition by interval: same distance, same direction, every note (14 min)
Plain language first. Transposition is interval arithmetic — unit 6 and 7's muscles — applied to every note at once. Pick the interval, pick the direction, move everything by exactly that: melody, chords, all of it. Spelling counts, because it always counts.
Show a four-bar phrase the room can sing — melody with its chords F · B♭ · C7 · F (that's 1, 4, 5, 1 — hold that thought for Segment 6):

A four-bar melody in F major: it steps up F4–G4 to a held A4, leaps to B♭4 and up to D5, walks down through the notes of C7 — C5, B♭4, G4, E4 — and lands on a whole-note F4. Chords: F, B♭, C7, F.
Fully worked example (walk it on the board, out loud). The singer wants it lower — a minor third lower. So: every note, down a m3, spelled properly. F4 → D4. G4 → E4. A4 → F♯4. B♭4 → G4. D5 → B4. C5 → A4. E4 → C♯4. And the chords make the same trip: F → D, B♭ → G, C7 → A7. The result:

- Two ways to run the same errand. By interval: move each note down a m3 and let the new key emerge. By key: decide "F major becomes D major," write the new signature (one flat becomes two sharps), and place each note the same scale-degree it was. Same answer either way — ^1 is still ^1, the leap is still a leap. Use whichever your brain trusts; check with the other.
- Interaction (2 min): call out single moves; the room answers in chorus: "A4 down a m3?" (F♯4). "B♭4 down a m3?" (G4). "C5 down a m3?" (A4). Speed builds confidence.
Misconception + cure:
- ❌ "Transposing changes the song."
✅ Cure: play both versions back to back and ask what changed. Nothing your ear cares about: every interval, every function, every cadence is intact. A song is a pattern of relationships; transposition moves the whole pattern like a house on rollers.
Segment 3 — "The singer says it's too high": the direction is the whole ballgame (12 min)
Ear first. Set the scene — Saturday soundcheck, the vocalist stops mid-chorus: "It's sitting too high. Can we move it?" This is the most common transposition request in the working world, and it has a one-word answer with an interval attached.
- Too high → transpose DOWN. Too low → transpose UP. Say it twice, because under pressure people invert it — they hear "change the key" and reach for the brighter, higher option. The singer did not ask for higher. Down means down.
- The peak-note arithmetic (worked example, on the board): the melody's highest note is E5. Your singer tells you her comfortable ceiling is C♯5. What interval drops E5 onto C♯5? E down to C♯: a minor third. So the whole chart goes down a m3, and the new peak is exactly C♯5 — landed, not squeaked. If you'd gone up a m3 instead, the peak would sit at G5. You'd be handing her a worse problem and calling it a favor.
- The procedure, stated once: find the peak, find the ceiling, measure the gap, move everything down by it. (Same logic upside-down for "too low" — find the floor.)
- Interaction (2 min): "Peak is D5, ceiling is B4 — direction and interval?" (down a m3). "Peak is C5, ceiling is G4?" (down a P4). Let the room do the unit-6 arithmetic out loud.
Misconception + cure:
- ❌ "Too high? Take it up a minor third — a new key will fix it."
✅ Cure: run the numbers in public. Peak E5, up a m3 → G5: worse by exactly the amount you moved. The fix for too high is down. This one got printed wrong in the world more than once; in this room we check it with a peak note every time.
Segment 4 — Transposing instruments: written is not sounding (16 min)
Ear first. If you have a trumpet player (or a recording), do the live version: piano plays C, trumpet plays its written C — the room hears two different pitches. If not, say the scene: you hand your trumpet-playing friend a melody in C, she plays every written note correctly, and what comes out is a major second lower than the piano. Nobody is wrong. The instrument is built that way.
- The rule that explains everything: written C sounds like the instrument's name. A B♭ trumpet's written C sounds B♭ — a major second lower than written. An E♭ alto sax's written C sounds E♭ — a major sixth lower. An F horn's written C sounds F — a perfect fifth lower.
- So the part gets written the other way: the player sounds lower than written, so you write higher than you want to hear. B♭ instruments: write a M2 above concert. E♭ instruments: write a M6 above. F instruments: write a P5 above.
- Fully worked example (board, all three at once): the band needs to hear concert C4. Trumpet part: D4 (a M2 up). Alto sax part: A4 (a M6 up). Horn part: G4 (a P5 up). Three different pages, one sound.
- And it scales up to whole keys: the band is in concert G major. Trumpet reads in A major. Alto reads in E major. Horn reads in D major. (Circle-of-fifths reflexes from unit 4 make this fast: up a M2, up a M6, up a P5 — same trip as the single notes.)
- Show the trumpet case on the staff — the room hears the first line; the trumpet reads the second:

Misconception + cure:
- ❌ "B♭ instruments play wrong notes."
✅ Cure: the trumpet plays exactly what's written; the page was moved in advance so the fingers could stay honest. One fingering system serves a whole family of horns — the cost is that the page and the air disagree by a fixed, known interval, and the copyist (you, now) absorbs the difference.
Segment 5 — The lead sheet: melody, symbols, and everybody builds their own part (10 min)
Plain language first. A lead sheet is a song reduced to what can't be improvised: the melody, the chord symbols above it, maybe the lyric. It is not a piano arrangement, not a bass part, not a horn line. It's a kit — every player realizes the symbols into a part that fits their instrument and their role.
- Unit 10's symbol fluency is the engine: Cmaj7 means C–E–G–B whoever you are; what you do with those four notes is your job description. Keys comp them; bass walks the roots (and honors every slash — G/B means B in the bass, still); guitar voices what the keys leave room for; a horn sustains a chord tone that isn't the melody.
- Interaction (2 min): put one bar on the board — the symbol Am7 — and go around the sections: "Bass, what's your first-choice note?" (A — unless a slash says otherwise). "Keys, name your four." (A–C–E–G.) "Singer — which of those is the melody's?" (Whichever the tune says: the melody rules; the symbols serve.)
- Close the loop: in the second session another group has to play from a chart you wrote. If your symbols are right, they don't need you standing there explaining. That's what notation is for — it was the point in unit 1, and it's the point now.
Misconception + cure:
- ❌ "A lead sheet is incomplete music — someone forgot to write the rest."
✅ Cure: it's deliberately minimal: the parts that must match are written; the parts that should breathe are left to the player. A full arrangement tells you what to play; a lead sheet tells you what to know.
Segment 6 — Nashville numbers, the roadmap, and the AI-critique moment (15 min) · Session 1 closes (~75)
Plain language first — the payoff you were promised in unit 11. Remember "store the progression as numbers, not letters"? Nashville session players built an entire industry convention on exactly that. The Nashville Number System writes each chord as the Arabic numeral of its scale degree in the key: 1 4 5 with minor chords marked — 6m (some charts write 6−). In G, 1 5 6m 4 means G · D · Em · C. Call the key change and the same napkin plays in E: E · B · C♯m · A. The chart didn't change, because the song didn't change.
- Say the equivalence out loud, because it's the week's biggest "wait, I already know this": Nashville numbers are Roman numerals in street clothes. 1 = I, 4 = IV, 5 = V, 6m = vi. Arabic instead of Roman,
minstead of lower case — same theory, work boots on. If you can analyze with Roman numerals, you already read Nashville. (And 2m = ii, 3m = iii; the chord on 7 is diminished and shows up rarely on charts — when it does, it's marked.) - The roadmap — how charts avoid writing everything twice. Repeat signs (play the section again); first and second endings (first pass takes ending 1; on the repeat, skip to ending 2); D.C. — da capo, go back to the top; D.S. — dal segno, go back to the sign (𝄋); al Fine — play until the word Fine and stop; al Coda — play to the "To Coda" mark, then jump to the Coda (𝄌), the tail. One breath of Italian, a lifetime of saved page-turns.
- ❌ "D.C. and D.S. are the same thing." ✅ Cure: D.C. returns to the top of the chart; D.S. returns to wherever the sign sits. Confuse them on a gig and half the band is in the verse while the other half plays the bridge. The sign exists precisely because "the top" isn't always where the music needs to go back to.
AI-critique moment (3 min, live on the projector). Paste into a chatbot: "My singer says the song is too high. Should I transpose the chart up or down, and does the answer change if she's only a little sharp of comfortable?" Read the answer with the room. Watch for the classic failures: waffling on the direction, or burying it under key-color talk. Then a second paste: "The band is in concert E♭. What key does the alto sax read in?" (The right answer is C major — up a M6.) Tools get this wrong in both directions. "Your tutorial this week audits exactly these — on your own knowledge, because after fifteen weeks you have it."
Why this makes you a better musician
This is the unit where the question answers itself, so collect the receipts from the term: Saturday, the vocalist wants the opener lower — you move the whole chart down a minor third during the break, peak note checked, and hand out a chart the band trusts (units 6 and 7's intervals, working). The youth-group trumpet kid shows up — you write his part a major second up without apologizing (unit 4's keys, working). The bandleader calls "one–five–six minor–four in B♭" — you're already playing, because unit 11 taught you the numbers and tonight taught you the accent. And "The Chart" — due at this week's close — is all of it in one artifact about a song you chose. Fifteen weeks ago a chart was a wall. Now it's a memo from one musician to another, and you write memos.
Callback + tease + hand-off.
- Callback: "Week 1: every note has an address. This week: you move whole neighborhoods of addresses on demand, and nothing musical breaks. That was the plan the entire time."
- Tease: "the final — and the review family for it (study guide, prep tutorial, practice exam) has been open since week 14. If you haven't opened it, tonight's the night; this unit closes a day early, on purpose, so the final gets the last days."
- Hand-off: read the chapter; Tutorial 15 is due before Week 15's second session — the studio transposes at speed and assumes its reps; practice set, quiz, discussion, and The Chart close the end of Week 15 — note the early close.
Segment 7 — Studio: "The singer says it's too high" (75 min) · Session 2
Run from the studio sheet (P-studio-week-15). Shape, for planning: learn a printed lead sheet by ear and voice → the singer's request lands (down a minor third — the direction is the graded reflex) → groups transpose the whole chart on the spot, chords first, melody second → each group writes the Nashville chart and discovers it's identical in both keys → charts swap tables and another group performs from them cold. It is the highest-energy session of the term — fifteen weeks of vocabulary all moving at once, out loud. 20 points, graded in session; async make-up path (full credit) on the studio sheet.

Scope flag
This outline stays inside Week 15's nine ledger concepts (transposition by interval and by key, transposing instruments, transposing for singers, lead-sheet reading, chord-symbol realization, Nashville numbers, the chart roadmap, handing a playable part to another musician) and uses only prior-unit machinery: intervals (Week 6–7), keys and the circle (Week 4–5), chord symbols and slashes (Week 10), Roman numerals and function (Week 11), cadence vocabulary in passing (Week 12). Nothing new is introduced for the final to test cold; that is this unit's design. Modes stay an enrichment aside if a student raises them — ear players may notice a Nashville chart of a Mixolydian-leaning song wants a ♭7 — acknowledged, unassessed, out of the banks.
