Week 8 — Midterm Review & the Growth Question
Welcome to your Week 8 Start Here page.
Why this matters
Whether you lead a shift in a hospital kitchen or grow a coffee cart of your own, the first half's tools still decide whether the business works, and growth adds a new question: who reports to whom?
In plain language
This week you look back at Weeks 1 to 7 and pull out the one tool or the one distinction each week asks for. Then you meet one new idea, organizational structure (how a business splits up its work and who reports to whom). You draw it as an organization chart (a diagram with a box for each job and a line to each person's boss) for the coffee cart at one cart and at two. The chart answers the question the second half of the course starts from: what changes when one cart becomes two?
- Already covered: Weeks 1 to 7 built the cart from its SWOT to its break-even.
- This week: review, the organization chart, and the midterm.
- How they connect: every earlier number holds when the cart grows.
- Where we're going next: Week 9, Reaching More Customers.
Focus
What have we learned, and what changes when one cart becomes two?
By the end of this module, you should be able to:
- [ ] rerun each of Weeks 1 to 7's key calculations or sorts
- [ ] draw an organization chart and find spans of control
- [ ] tell a line position from a staff position
- [ ] compare centralization with decentralization, and tall with flat
To-do
Plan your week
- Read Chapter 8 (about 40 minutes), then the lecture and slides.
- Do the practice set (about 20 minutes) and the discussion (about 45 minutes).
- Review, then take the midterm.
This week's checkpoint: draw the cart's chart at two carts and give the owner's span of control.
You've got this
Take it in order, and ask your instructor if a step snags.
