The short version. These sample courses are free to download and free to teach with. Import one into your LMS, change anything you like, and use it in any course you teach, at any institution, for as long as you like. What you may not do is pass the pack along: no reposting, reselling, redistributing, or uploading it to a repository. The materials were generated with AI assistance and are meant to be reviewed by you before students see them. They are not open educational resources and carry no open license.
1. Who we are and what this covers. Kodojo, LLC ("Kodojo," "we," "us"), a California limited liability company doing business as The Course Maker, makes sample course packs available at samples.thecoursemaker.com (each a "Sample Pack"). This license covers every Sample Pack you download, whether free or as a Calendar-aligned edition (Section 6), and every copy or adaptation you make of it. By downloading or using a Sample Pack you agree to this license. If you do not agree, do not download it.
2. What you may do. Kodojo grants you a perpetual, non-exclusive, non-transferable, royalty-free license, under all of Kodojo's right, title, and interest, if any, in the Sample Pack, to download, import, reproduce, edit, adapt, translate, and deploy the Sample Pack and your adaptations of it in courses you teach or support, in any learning management system, at any institution where you are employed or affiliated, now or in the future. You may share your adapted copy with colleagues at the same institution for the same course, and you may keep and use your downloaded copy after the free-download period ends.
3. Covenant not to assert. To the extent any part of a Sample Pack is not subject to copyright, Kodojo covenants not to assert any claim against you arising from your use of that material as permitted by this license. Your rights under this license do not depend on the copyright status of the materials.
4. What you may not do. You may not (a) sell, rent, sublicense, or otherwise redistribute a Sample Pack or a substantial part of it, in original or adapted form, to anyone outside the use described in Section 2; (b) post a Sample Pack or a substantial part of it on a public website, a course-sharing site, a marketplace, or any open educational resource repository or commons, or otherwise offer it under any open license; (c) remove the "About these course materials" page or the Course Maker provenance line from a pack you deploy to students, or alter them so that the materials' AI-assisted origin is no longer disclosed (you may move the page and may add your own disclosure); (d) present a Sample Pack as endorsed by, or as the product of, any institution or person other than as disclosed in the pack; or (e) use The Course Maker name or marks except to identify the source of the pack as the pack itself does.
5. What a Sample Pack is, and is not. Sample Packs are generated with AI assistance by The Course Maker from a course design reviewed before build, as described on the pack's "About these course materials" page. They are designed to be reviewed and edited by the instructor of record before use with students, and they are not a substitute for that review. Readings and videos in a Sample Pack are links to external sources that Kodojo neither hosts nor controls; their availability, accuracy, accessibility, and terms are their owners'. Sample Packs carry no instructor's or institution's name, no term dates, and no claim of alignment to any institution's curriculum. Sample Packs are not open educational resources, are not released under any open license, and are not in the public domain by any declaration of ours. Kodojo generates courses on the same subjects for other instructors and institutions; nothing in a Sample Pack is exclusive to you.
6. Free period, Calendar-aligned editions, and updates. Free Sample Packs are available for download through June 30, 2028; a copy downloaded before then remains yours under this license afterward. A Calendar-aligned edition is the same Sample Pack with the dates set to your term and your name on the provenance line, sold for the price shown at checkout (currently $29); it is delivered by download link, is covered by this same license, and its price is credited toward your first paid course build or per-term update from The Course Maker within twelve months of purchase. A Calendar-aligned edition is not a course update: it does not add alignment to your outline of record, an alignment report, institutional policies, or ongoing support, which are products of the Service under the Terms of Service. Calendar-aligned edition purchases are refundable within fourteen days if the pack fails to import into a supported LMS and we cannot resolve the failure; otherwise they are final. Keeping a pack current for later terms is a paid update, offered separately.
7. AI limitations and no warranty. Sample Packs are produced by artificial intelligence under unsettled legal questions under U.S. copyright law. We cannot guarantee uniqueness, originality, copyrightability, or freedom from similarity to other works, and we make no representations regarding copyright eligibility or infringement risks. Except as expressly stated on the pack's "About these course materials" and "Course Materials Cost: $0" pages and in the Accessibility & Inclusion page's description of how the pack is designed, Sample Packs are provided "as is" and "as available," and Kodojo disclaims all other warranties, express or implied, including, without limitation, merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, non-infringement, and any warranty about academic outcomes. You are responsible for reviewing the materials before use and for compliance with your institution's policies and applicable law.
8. Limitation of liability. To the fullest extent permitted by law, Kodojo's total liability arising out of or relating to a Sample Pack will not exceed the amount you paid Kodojo for that pack (which, for a free Sample Pack, is zero), and Kodojo will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, consequential, special, or punitive damages, or for lost profits, data, or goodwill.
9. Privacy. Downloading a Sample Pack requires an email address; the links inside a pack pass through a redirector that records aggregate click counts and nothing about the person clicking; audio briefs, when present, are counted the same way. The Course Maker Privacy Policy at thecoursemaker.com/privacy describes what we collect and how we use it. We never receive your students' names, grades, work, or accounts.
10. Termination. This license ends automatically if you breach Section 4 and do not cure the breach within thirty days of notice. Sections 3, 5, 7, 8, and 11 survive termination. Kodojo may stop offering Sample Packs at any time; doing so does not affect copies already downloaded under this license.
11. General. This license is governed by the laws of the State of California, without regard to conflict-of-laws rules, and any dispute will be resolved as provided in the Terms of Service at thecoursemaker.com/terms, which are incorporated here to that extent. This license is the entire agreement between you and Kodojo about Sample Packs and supersedes any earlier statement about them. If any provision is unenforceable, the rest remains in effect. We may revise this license for future downloads by posting a new version with a new "Last updated" date; the version in effect when you downloaded a pack governs that pack.
