Week 11 — Hiring and the Law: Human Resources & Labor Relations
Welcome to your Week 11 Start Here page.
Why this matters
Whether you hire cooks for a hospital kitchen or work a front desk at a hotel, you need to know how people are found, paid, and protected by law.
In plain language
A business is only as good as the people who do its work. Human resource management (the work of planning for, finding, hiring, training, evaluating, and paying those people) is how a business gets them and keeps them. This week you will plan a job, tell finding applicants apart from choosing among them, and price a new hire. You will also meet labor relations (how managers and workers deal with each other when the workers act as a group) and the federal laws every employer works within. The laws are taught as general education, and nothing here is legal advice for a real situation.
- Already covered: Week 10 organized the work.
- This week: hiring, pay, unions, and the laws.
- How they connect: positions get filled.
- Where we're going next: Week 12, Keeping People Engaged.
