Week 15 — Movements, Solidarity, and the Course Synthesis

Introduction to Ethnic Studies Free sample edition

Why this matters

A student club sharing an event with another club and a museum or library that returns items or records community stories both meet this week's question of how groups work together.

In plain language

This last chapter asks how groups with different histories worked together, and how the government later answered some of the wrongs this course has read. You will meet three cross-group coalitions (alliances of groups that act together while each keeps its own name): a student strike, a farmworkers' strike, and an island occupation by people from many Native nations. You will compare three laws of apology, payment, and return, and learn why a formal apology (a government's official statement that it did wrong) is not the same thing as repair. Then you will read the course's oral-history archive one last time, through every lens the term has given you, and say what it all shows in one plain sentence.

  • Already covered: the four core fields, citizenship, and intersectionality.
  • This week: three coalitions, three laws of apology and return, the synthesis.
  • How they connect: each coalition and law calls back an earlier unit.

Focus

How did groups work together, and what does the archive show through every lens?

By the end of this module, you should be able to:

  • [ ] define a cross-group coalition and solidarity
  • [ ] say who began the Delano grape strike and who joined
  • [ ] compare the 1988, 1990, and 1993 laws
  • [ ] trace the 14th Amendment across two groups

To-do

Plan your week

  1. Read Chapter 15 (about 35–45 minutes), then the lecture and slides.
  2. Work the lecture tutorial (60–90 minutes).
  3. Try the practice set (15–25 minutes).
  4. Do the workshop (about 90 minutes), the discussion, and the assignment, then the quiz.

This week's checkpoint: say what an apology, a payment, and a return each do.

You've got this

Last stretch: take it in order, and ask your instructor if a step snags.
