Pick-one quick path (20–23 min total)
- How to Give a Memorable Toast — Toastmasters International
- All About Toasting — Emily Post Institute
- Small Group Roles: Basics — Patricia Jenkinson
① Which job am I there to do?
Chapter 14, Section “Sort the occasion: what are you there to do?” · Session 1, Segment 2, “Sort the occasion” · Remember: name the job first, because an introduction serves the next speaker and an acceptance serves the honor.
- How to Introduce a Speaker — Center for Writing and Speaking — a one-page speaking-center handout on the speech of introduction: keep it to about a minute, fit the background to what the audience already knows, check the guest's name and facts, and end on a clear handoff; compare its advice with the chapter's fix for the introduction about the introducer, and use it while you complete the Week-14 module overview. (reading, 2–4 min)
- How to Make an Acceptance Speech — Howcast — a very short video on the acceptance speech that warns against the endless thank-you list and suggests thanking the people who matter most, sincerely, and saying exactly what you are thankful for; match its advice to the chapter's fix for the acceptance that thanks everyone. (video, 1 min) (captions: creator)
② Building and giving the toast
Chapter 14, Section “Build a toast in four beats” · Session 1, Segment 3, “Build a toast in four beats” · Remember: one true detail, what it reveals, a wish, and the raise, sized to the time you have.
- How to Give a Memorable Toast — Toastmasters International — a short tutorial from a public-speaking champion on preparing a toast people will remember; as you watch, label each tip as one of the four beats or one of the three criteria. (video, 4 min) (captions: creator)
- 5 tips for giving an amazing retirement speech — Entente Education Canada — an experienced communicator's five quick tips for the speech a retiree gives at their own send-off, the same occasion as the chapter's library toast but the other speaker's job; its ten-minute ceiling is far longer than any toast, so check which of its tips still match the course's three criteria and the specific-detail principle. (video, 2 min) (captions: creator)
- All About Toasting — Emily Post Institute — an etiquette guide to who toasts first, when toasts happen, how the honoree responds, and why a sip of any drink is enough; its call for clean humor and no embarrassing stories builds on Week 7's work on appropriateness. Stop before its section on spur-of-the-moment toasts, since next week takes up impromptu speaking. (reading, 5–8 min)
③ Working as a group
Chapter 14, Section “Work as a group: the agenda, the roles, and the formats” · Session 2, Segment 4, “Work as a group” · Remember: agree on criteria before solutions, and watch for the task and maintenance moves any member can make.
- Foolproof process for Decision-making: The Standard Agenda — Communication Nut — a short walk-through of the six-step decision process adapted from John Dewey, which the chapter calls the reflective-thinking agenda; check that its steps match the chapter's order, with criteria set before solutions. (video, 5 min) (captions: automatic)
- Small Group Roles: Basics — Patricia Jenkinson — a lesson on what a group role is and the main kinds of roles members play; its labels may differ a little from the course's task, maintenance, and self-centered families, so sort each role it names into one of the three. (video, 11 min) (captions: creator)
- Difference between Leader and Leadership — Patricia Jenkinson — a three-minute explainer on why holding the leader title is not the same as doing leadership, and why any member can lead; it is the chapter's leadership as a function in a nutshell. (video, 3 min) (captions: creator)
- Developing Facilitation Skills — Community Tool Box — a practical guide to guiding a group's process; read the parts on facilitator skills and tips and on dealing with disrupters, and match each move to a maintenance role or to a self-centered role it answers. (reading, 10–15 min)
Optional one-stop reference (free online reference)
- The Gettysburg Address (Bliss copy) — Abraham Lincoln Online — the archive's text of the short dedication speech held up this week as a model of brevity; read it aloud once, time yourself, and notice how much one short speech can carry. (reading, 3–5 min)
