Week 15 — Impromptu & Adapting on the Fly / Handling Q&A

Public Speaking Free sample edition

Why this matters

A job candidate asked an unexpected interview question and a resident called on without warning at a neighborhood meeting both have a few seconds to land one clear point. A student taking questions after a class presentation needs an honest way to say what they do not know.

In plain language

This week you learn to speak when nobody gave you time to prepare. Impromptu speaking, which means talking with little or no preparation, like answering a question on the spot, feels like a different skill from a rehearsed speech, but it runs on the same habits. You learn a four-part shape, the PREP frame (point, reason, example, point), that you can build in seconds. You also learn honest ways to take questions from an audience, and calm ways to keep going when a slide fails, your mind goes blank, or your time gets cut.

  • Already covered: organizational patterns (Week 5), keyword cards (Week 6), impromptu and extemporaneous delivery (Week 9), the backup plan for a slide (Week 10).
  • This week: the PREP frame and its backups, buying time, one clear point, the Q&A toolkit, and recovering from mishaps.
  • How they connect: every frame this week is an organizational pattern shrunk to a minute.
  • Where we're going next: Week 16, the cumulative final, with no new material.

Focus

How do you land one clear point when there is no time to prepare, and answer questions honestly?

By the end of this module, you should be able to:

  • [ ] build a 60- to 90-second answer in the PREP frame from a one-minute keyword plan
  • [ ] buy time with a pause and a reframe instead of filler
  • [ ] answer routine, hostile, unknown, and off-topic questions honestly

To-do

Plan your week

  1. Read Chapter 15 (about 40 minutes), then the lecture and slides.
  2. Do the tutorial (60–90 minutes) and the practice set (about 20 minutes).
  3. Do the Speech Workshop (about 90 minutes), the discussion, and the assignment.
  4. Take the quiz.

This week's checkpoint: draw a prompt, plan for one minute in keywords, and answer it twice with your point in the first sentence.
