Week 15 — Globalization, Colonialism, and Applied Anthropology, and the Course Synthesis

Cultural Anthropology Free sample edition

Welcome to your Week 15 Start Here page.

Why this matters

A business student tracing a supply chain and a nursing student caring for a family whose relatives live in another country both meet this week's question: how is one local place tied to the wider world?

In plain language

Every place you have studied this term is tied to places far away. This week you will meet globalization (the growing flow of goods, people, money, and ideas across the world) and colonialism (one society ruling another and using its land, labor, and resources). You will follow migration (people moving to live somewhere new) and remittances (money migrants send home). You will see how communities protect their cultural heritage (the practices and objects they count as their own) and win the repatriation (return) of objects taken from them. Last, you will read the running market one more time, through every idea the course has taught.

  • Already covered: Week 6 gave you exchange and the potlatch; Weeks 1 to 14 gave you the lenses.
  • This week: globalization, colonialism, migration, heritage, and repatriation.
  • How they connect: every earlier lens now reads one market at once.

Focus

How is one small place tied to the rest of the world, and what does the market look like through every lens?

By the end of this module, you should be able to:

  • [ ] state colonialism's history plainly
  • [ ] use core and periphery as a model
  • [ ] write a gap between shares in percentage points
  • [ ] explain repatriation as law
  • [ ] read the market through every lens

To-do

Plan your week

  1. Read Chapter 15 (about 40 minutes), then the lecture and slides.
  2. Work the lecture tutorial (60–90 minutes) and the practice set (about 20 minutes).
  3. Do the Ethnography Workshop (about 90 minutes), the discussion, and the assignment.
  4. Take the quiz.

This week's checkpoint: name three lenses that explain the market's monthly money transfers.

You've got this

This is the last module of new material. Take it in order, and ask your instructor if a step snags.
